Yes, it's a nice natural light environmental portrait, and I agree that it was taken by someone who knew what they were doing. I suspect it wasn't especially staged, because someone staging that who knew what they were doing would probably have added a bounce card on camera left to add a bit of fill light. So my guess is that it was someone who knew him, and knew photography, that happened to turn up and want to take his photo. And if so, it came out really well.
