044: Death
It was hard to sit in a hospital and wait to hear whether his little girl was alive or dead. It was hard just to wait, but there was nothing they could do.
"I wish we’d gone to Victor or Gene first," Dale moaned, pressing his eyes to the heels of his hands.
"They couldn’t have done anything, darling. They would have sent us here."
Stacey reached for his hand, voice choked with tears. He gave it to her. She squeezed him like there was no tomorrow.
"Gert will be okay. She has to be all right," Dale said, more to reassure Stacey than anything.
"She has to be. I can’t have another baby," Stacey moaned. Her voice broke. "I don’t want to have another baby. I want my baby."
He pulled her to him. She buried her face in his chest and sobbed.
He could see everything play out whenever he closed his eyes. The playground, the slide, the boy pushing her off of it. And Gertrude falling, falling, and hitting the ground hard. She didn’t move. Barely breathed. Stacey had almost died on the spot.
"She’ll be fine," he whispered. "She has to be. She can’t die."
Stacey sobbed hard against him. Dale wrapped his arms around her and held her for what seemed like forever.
