07: Archery

Nico chattered away. Robert and Tina exchanged a look.

Robert had come home while she was in the middle of telling her mother about her day. He’d missed a good bit. So he wasn’t expecting it when his thirteen-year-old bookworm of a daughter said:

"Dad, I’ve found a sport I like."

Robert paused. "Come again?"

"Archery. I want to take up archery."

He looked her over sternly. "Archery."

"Yes."

"Hm. Archery." He tapped his chin. "Tina, what do you think?"

She frowned. "It’s a very… respectable sport, I suppose. I just never thought our child would say those words in quite that order."

"Does that mean no?" Nico asked.

Her parents sat down across the table from her.

"I ran track," Robert said. "I was bad at it."

"I was an equestrienne," Tina added. "And a cheerleader. And on the soccer team. And I played tennis."

"And had straight ‘A’s and still dated football players," Robert teased.

Nico wasn’t sure where this was heading.

"I suppose you can take up archery," Robert conceded. "On three conditions."

"Anything! What?"

"First, you must give it a chance. I think six months is reasonable." He looked at his wife. She nodded.

"Okay!"

"Second, you must keep your grades up. An ‘A’ average, at the least."

"I can do that!"

"And third, you must clean and keep your room."

She frowned. Almost changed her mind. Then, reluctantly, "Okay."

"We’ll go for equipment tomorrow. Look into it at school."

Nico grinned delightedly. He shooed her off to start on her room.
