041: Computer
Catherine was a little nervous when the office switched her from what largely amounted to a typewriter, to the creature that sat on her desk.
Oh, it did basically the same thing. She could still do her job. There wasn’t a whole lot to secretarying for her boss. Take a note, write a letter, send a memo. That was easy. The hard part was figuring out what to do with the mouse.
The old one hadn’t had one. It was all keyboard commands and DOS. This one came with something named after a rodent she usually had Geoffrey get rid of, that one was apparently supposed to ‘click’ with. She rolled her eyes and missed her outdated technology.
“Catherine? Can you send a memo for me? We’re trying out the new network on the computers and I wanted to make sure it was working all right,” Mr. Allan said.
“Yes, sir.”
She grimaced at the mouse and opened the network’s BBS. The thing was a monster. It took quite a while to load. She decided leaving it on would probably be a good idea.
“Ready?”
“Yes, sir.”
“To: Everyone in the department-you can just punch that in the Send line and it’ll, yeah, like that-We have a new system! This is how you will be notified of changes and meetings from now on. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.”
He waffled on for a moment and ended it like he usually did; with “Have an excellent day. Mr. Allan”
He stood over her shoulder and watched while she sent it. When it disappeared from the screen, he went to the nearest employee’s computer to see if it had worked.
The cheers that reached her ears told her it hand, and, since it appeared the thing was there to stay, she struck a truce with the mouse.
