026: Separation

He sighed and stirred his coffee, staring into it like it held the secrets of the universe.

“Geoff? What’s wrong?” Catharine asked.

He faked a smile. “Ah, nothing.”

“Did your conversation with your mom go badly?” she persisted.

He shook his head. “It’s nothing.”

Catharine wasn’t so easily fooled. His mother had called three times a day, every day, for the past week. Every time she called it left him in a mood. Every time he got in a mood, she worried.

“You can tell me stuff,” she reminded him.

He nodded. “I know.”

Catharine ran her toes up his leg under the table. Over his thigh. Rested at his crotch. He gave her a very pointed look and reached down to rub the foot in his lap with one hand.

“Oh, that feels good,” she moaned.

He chuckled, then sighed.

“Geoff?”

“Mom wants me to witness the divorce papers, and she’s going broke.”

Catharine chewed her lip. “And she wants you to help her out?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh.”

He sighed again. “I’m just making enough right now to pay the rent and eat sometimes. The bookstore doesn’t pay great, but I just can’t leave ‘em.”

She nodded. “I understand. Do you need me to-”

“No!”

The look in his eyes made her recoil a little. He rubbed his eyes with his free hand.

“I’m sorry, babe,” he groaned. “I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t worry about it. The offer’s open.” She smiled gently at him.

“I’ll think of something.”

She nodded. Stood up and walked around the table to sit on his knee. He grinned half-heartedly and kissed her.

“It’ll work out. Things like this tend to,” she assured him.

He pushed his coffee aside with a mischievous smile and pushed her back onto it.

“That’s good to know.”
