Summary: Catharine calls Geoffrey at work.

024: Books

“Geoffrey, would you get that corner straightened up?”

The owner of the bookstore, and Geoffrey’s boss, gestured at a rather disorganized area of the store. He nodded and went to take care of it. It may have been boring work, but it was still better than fast food. And, anyway, it was Catharine’s favorite bookstore.

The old man went to answer the ringing telephone. His wife rang up another customer. Geoffrey organized books. He was very nearly finished when the owner called his name again.

“Geoffrey, do you have a minute?”

“Yes.” He stood up, leaving the books as they were. “Do you need something?”

The owner brandished the phone. “Call for you.”

He went to answer it as quickly as he could.

“Hello?”

“Hey, babe.”

He smiled. “Cathy? What’s up?”

“Nothing,” she replied. “Just wanted to see if you could give me a ride home after you get off.”

He could think of no reason not to, so he agreed. “I get off an hour after you do. Is that okay?”

“Yeah. See you then.”

“Later, baby.”

He couldn’t suppress a delighted smile as he handed the receiver back to the owner. The old man gave him a knowing look and he went back to organizing books.
