They're now saying that it won't be "Kingdom Hearts 3", but instead an all-new series. It's still Kingdom Hearts, but just not a sequel to what's come before.
That makes the possibility of a time jump even more likely, but I have to admit, it's a pretty bold move if they're dropping the current cast and storyline altogether - they may not have reached the complexity of Final Fantasy characters, but Sora and friends are certainly endearing in their own way and any new protagonists are going to have to work overtime to win fandom's acceptance.
I don't mind this too much, especially since the writers did the incredible with KH2: they pulled a Raiden (ala MGS2) and yet made Roxas the most beloved character of the game.
The whole intro, I was getting impatient waiting for Sora to come back, and then from that crucial "summer vacation end" scene on, all I could think of was how Roxas would continue to figure into everything.
It was hard to care about Mr. All Perfect, Never Lonely Sora from that point on in contrast to the flawed, tortured and "heartless" kid who never was supposed to exist.
Er, actually, that "Raiden" comment doesn't quite make sense in the way I intended it, and yet makes even more sense in its proper context - everyone wanted Snake more when they found out Raiden was the main character of MGS2, and somehow everyone liked Roxas more after he too went away.
Well, that's the brilliant part IMO - we don't know enough about Roxas when he makes his exit to feel that strongly about him; it's only later that the plot folds back on itself to retroactively make him such a strong and profound character.
