Day 30: Last movie you watched

The last film I saw was a documentary called "Hot Coffee."

We all know the story of the lady that sued McDonalds because she burned herself with their coffee. I'll admit I used to think that was a frivolous lawsuit too, but that's because I didn't even bother to get the full story. I just went along with what I was told, the urban legend of it all. So imagine my surprise when I see this documentary and get the real story of this poor lady who got 3rd degree burns from a coffee that, yes, was wayyy too hot. But this story is not just about this particular lawsuit. Oh no, this is only the beginning. Corporations used this lawsuit as an example to sneak their way into politics, into the civil justice system. Because of this, tort reform was implemented under the Bush administration, and mandatory arbitration became the norm in every contract that we sign, even ones that you don't have to sign like in changes to your credit card terms of service. Now if you don't know what arbitration is, well, you're not alone. I didn't even know what that was until I saw this documentary. It means that you are waiving your right to sue a corporation, a business or a person in a court of law. You are literally giving up your rights. Instead your dispute is handled in secret, by people who are chosen by the parties you are suing. So basically, we are screwed. Now I'll admit, I know as much about the law system as much as I know how to cook, which is not a whole lot. This film was an eye opener and I suggest you watch it, because you might think what's it to you, but it has everything to do with you and to every taxpaying person in this country. Watch it!

The civil justice system has become the bitch of big business in this country and we're the ones paying for it while these corporations keep getting richer and richer.
