I am very very happy to be posting the "story" of Matt's proposal on Thursday night : )
While I'd love to give Matt full credit for the beautiful ring I'm currently wearing, the truth is that he was smart enough to involve me in the ring design/creation process. This meant that I knew in advance that he was planning on proposing (and let me tell you, keeping that knowledge to myself was TOUGH!), and I knew in advance what the ring would look like, more or less. All of this meant that Matt's window for surprising me was *extremely* limited. Fortunately, he is both romantic and creative, so he managed it anyway.
The ring was supposed to be ready on Wednesday, but there was some sort of hiccup, so they told him to come back on Thursday and pick it up. Thursday morning they called and left a message, which Matt told me said that they hadn't been able to clear things up yet and that they needed him to come in and work it out with them. He came home that afternoon and told me that while they hadn't been able to fix it, everything would be set by Friday. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed.
Thursday evening we went to a gala/awards dinner with Matt's mother, step-father, and sister (she was in for Spring Break). On the way back to their home for some hang-out time following the dinner, Matt kept talking about how nice the full moon looked. As we were driving up the mountain to their house, he suggested that we stop and look out over the ocean / city of San Diego in the moonlight (since we had gotten moving ahead of everyone else) from a war memorial on top of the mountain. He distracted me by asking if I could find out apartment building, and then turned to me and said "so it turns out that I am a much better liar than you thought."
He got down on one knee and told me I was the love of his life, wonderful, beautiful, and made him very happy, and asked me to marry him. I gasped, said "of course!" and he kissed me as he put the ring on my hand. It was everything I could possibly have hoped for. We went back to his family's home and broke the news to them - that's where the photo of us comes from.
So that's the story. As for the wedding, we're planning on a summer wedding, most likely in 2011, though if this coming year proves to be far less stressful than I'm imagining, it might be as early as summer 2010. It will definitely be here in San Diego - Matt has convinced me it will be much easier to get people to come to San Diego than to Pittsburgh, and my family is so small that we can easily bring them all out here. We're in no rush - we just want to enjoy being engaged and plan the wedding with minimal stress and maximal happiness. : )
