Get ready for a ginormous post that 1) is a way late follow up to
my last post, and 2) covers a back log of random bits of stuff that have made me squee/giggle/flail/??? what have you over the past few weeks duing my unplanned el-jay haitus.
First off: FU RUSSELL T. DAVIES FOR MAKING ME CRY.
Ok, it's not really that either, but I just had to get that out again.
No, this post is about THE TOTAL AND COMPLETELY FUCKING AMAZING, NEVER EVEN BOVVERED HBIC DONNA FUCKING NOBLE
- and how she was so completely fucking screwed over.
+ Donna Noble was a bresh of fresh air for a show and Doctor that had turned ridiculously emo and self-involved. She took no prisoners and became the the Doctor's best mate - someone he knew he could go anywhere with and have a laugh over anything. She barged straight in, eager to see new worlds and peoples, and proved her loyalty and heart and strength time and time again, and she stands heads above her predecessors in the new series.
She was funny and tough and took no shit from anyone, but beneath the hard exterior is one of the saddest characters I think I've ever seen on a show - she thought so little of herself and believed others did as well, but hid it beneath those so many layers she'd grown to protect herself and her fragile psyche - she didn't like anyone to know or see who she thought she truly was, and didn't believe others when they tried to tell her that she was so much more than she gave herself credit for.
Donna: I kept hearing that noise. That heartbeat.
The Human/Doctor: Oh that was me. My single heart. 'Cause I'm a complicated man of time and space. Must've rippled back. Converging on you.
Donna: But why me?
The Human/Doctor: 'Cause you're special.
Donna: I keep telling you, I'm not.
The Human/Doctor: No but you are. Oh.... you really don't believe that, do you? I can see, Donna, what you're thinking. All that attitude, all that lip- 'Cause all this time, you think you're not worth it.
Donna: Stop it.
The Human/Doctor: Shouting at the world 'cause no one's listening. Well, why should they.
Donna: Doctor. Stop it.
The Human/Doctor: But look at what you did! No.... it's more than that. It's like... we were always heading for this. You came to the TARDIS. And you found me again. Your grandad, your car. Donna, your car! You parked your car right where the TARDIS was going to land. Oh! We've been blind. Something's been drawing us together for such a long time.
Donna: But you're talking, like, destiny. There's no such thing. Is there?
It's like the idea of her being special is just SO FOREIGN, so unfathomable and so out of the realm of possibility, that makes me connect and sympathize with her, and my heart BREAK for her, all at the same time. And that bit of dialouge, that followed over from
the conversation between Rose and Donna in Turn Left, GOD it hit me RIGHT. THERE.
At least she got to be SUPER MEGA AWESOMESAUCE before going out
AND THEN OMG SO MUCH THIS. For RTD to make her the most IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE, and to have her eventually realize that she WAS IMPORTANT and that she had WORTH (PLUS MAKING HER PART FUCKING TIME LORD), and then have her FORGET EVERY SINGLE BIT OF IT - I just, I can't even....it was just so unnecessarily SAVAGE and tragic and THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL FOR YOU DAVIES. Just, SRSLY, WHY DID ALL OF HER MEMORIES HAVE TO GET WIPED??? The whole freaking HEART OF THE TARDIS was removed from Rose's brain but her memories didn't get wiped! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. A WORSE ENDING COULD NOT HAVE BEEN IMAGINED.
AND OH GOD THE END.... I cried. A lot.

+ Donna really made me enjoy Tennant’s Doctah - I was always pretty iffy about him, he just seemed a bit too manic and human (next to MY Doctor Eleven) - but with her I really felt like she grounded him while making him more fun and light, and they played off each other so well and it was like they had been together longer than they really had. This was most likely thanks to how well Tennant clicked with Catherine Tate and I srsly ADORE THEM as castmates [although I doubt they will ever reach the level of OMGLOVE:O I have for Matt/Karen - omg I luv my pretty hipster bbs!] - but
OH HAI GREATEST SKETCH EVER! (and yeah, basically the
entire 2009 special of Nevermind the Buzzcocks.) There was just a natural ease and chemistry that I FLOVED - except when he got all mo-fo emo. God for a show that’s supposed to be family friendly it sure got fucking depressing. Ten sadfaced everywhere, while Eleven quietly simmers and then explodes with srsly controlled anger and frustration. I much prefer the latter form of angst, thanks. And yeah, while Eleven will always be MY doctor, catching up on the past series did give me a greater appreciation for Tennant - well, really S4 when he was allowed to be fun along with emo.
BUT ANYWAY - TIME FOR FUN VIDEO CLIPS OF DONNA (and sometimes the Doctor) BEING AWESOME!
BEST. EVER:

What, it doesn't do wood?!? + AND ANOTHER THING: As a companion, Donna got MAJORLY shafted in her series. No other companion had as many interlopers on their special Doctor-Companion awesome funteims as Donna did. Sure, Martha had Jack for an ep or two, but he didn’t really take away from her time with the Doctor (although she did have the constant ghost of Rose hanging around). And yeah, Rose had Mickey and Jackie and Jack - but again, not the same as a former companion coming all up in your special Tardis time - Donna had Martha showing up for 3 episodes then AGAIN in the finale, PLUS Sarah Jane, Jack, Mickey, Jackie AND fucking Rose “I need to be the center of the Doctor’s world at all times” Tyler. SERIOUS SHAFT. She had all these past companions all up in her business!
+ And regarding Rose, case in point, during the last two eps when she was being all: “WHO'S SHE?!?! I was here first. *Poutpoutpout*” BITCH NO YOU WEREN’T. When it was just Rose and the Doctor, I almost liked her, but she treated Mickey like shit, and omg whenever a HINT of another woman was around, HOLY GIRL WENT ALL CATTY SARAN WRAP and was like “WTF I’m the only woman in his life! No one has come before or after me!” UGGGGHH GTFO. And her "Find me Doctor!"? Like BITCH PLZ, YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY PERSON LOOKING FOR HIM AND TRYING TO GET HIM BACK.
I did a re-watch "School Reunion" recently, and the first few minutes reminded me why I had liked Rose - she can be fun and snarky and could be genuinely enjoyable - and then Sarah Jane shares .5 seconds of screentime with her and I remember why I couldn’t STAND HER. And then they got all bondy and giggly over the Doctor’s feeling up the Tardis and I liked her, and then Rose gets all “I LIKE THE TARDIS JUST THE WAY IT IS IT’S SO MUCH BETTER THAN IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO” and I remembered again why she annoyed the crap out of me lol.
AND PPL, STOP PAIRING ROSE WITH ELEVEN. I mean honestly, could you really see Eleven putting up with all that jealousy, insecurity and clingyness. Abso-fucking NO - he would have approximately ZERO PATIENCE for that. Ten/Rose got their happy little ending - that door has CLOSED. Leave that pairing in its own little Tennent/Piper bubble.
In sum, my companion ranking is as follows: Amy = Donna = Sarah Jane >> Martha >>>>>>>> Rose
+ And as a bonus unpopular opinion - I actually really liked "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead". Maybe it’s because I met River for the first time in Time of Angels and EFFING LOVED HER, maybe not. I love when Moffat takes something mundane but always a slight bit creepy, like statues or shadows, and makes it even more fucking terrifying. Plus Donna and her “saved world” were lovely but heartbreaking at the same time. She got what she always wanted only to learn it was an illusion. Plus, I’m a major nerd and the idea of a planet that is just one giant library pleases me greatly :D
+ As a potential companion myself, however, I'm
more like Sarah Jane Smith - and having really liked "School Reunion", I've gone back and watched some vintage who. I can see and accept this conclusion.
Since finishing Tennant’s run (minus the 2009 "specials"), I’ve found myself totally sucked into Sarah Jane/Ten.
I really like their chemistry and was super intrigued by them when Sarah returned to the series -
and holy WOW the way the Doctor’s face just lit right up and BEAMED LIKE A FREAKING SUN with happiness and adoration when he saw her again - and how their relationship with each other seemed to automatically fall into old patters - despite the years of separation - and yet you could still sense
how hesitant they were with each other at the same time - probably helped by Sarah's lingering
bitterness at being abandoned. I mean srsly,
WTF DOCTOR?? (and sarah wtf are you wearing??) And then I was totally disappointed when it was only a one-off. Yeah, they interacted briefly in Journey’s End and had that silent goodbye in End of Time, BUT I WANT MORE DAMMIT
(hooray for SJA “Sarah Jane’s Wedding Pt2” episode). Yeah, I ship it. And here’s a big reason why:

And it’s just with Ten - well, romantically at least. Ten is the only Doctor I’ve ever considered a romantic lead - and I don’t know that I’ll love the idea of Sarah Jane with Eleven as much - he’s just too alien, which is a reason I prefer him to Tennant’s Doctor - I don’t see myself getting caught up with hardcore romantic ship preference with him because he is so obviously NOT - whereas with Ten you could imagine him sexing up falling in love with anyone and everyone. Eleven comes across more like Tom Baker or Patrick Troughton’s Doctor - not asexual exactly, but pairing him up with someone isn’t the first or even fourth thing you think about with him.
And right off, thanks to Fanfiction.net I stumbled across a BRILLIANT series by Weimlady - at it’s heart its centered around Ten/Sarah but does a fantastic job of really including the rest of the cast in the action. Yeah, the banter between characters can be a touch corny, but there is so little good fic out there that I AM NOT PICKY IN THE SLIGHTEST. The author does a marvelous job of incorporating canon with her own timeline - actually the passage of canon time serves as an important piece of the overall story’s foundation. Great use is also made of the current companion (and a couple from the past as well). It brings back Harry Sullivan who traveled with them when the Doctor was v.4, and I especially liked the two parts that covered Matha’s reign (and not only because part 4 was just GUHHH).
It starts off sometime after Doomsday and with each sequel hops a little bit forward through time. With each sequel the relationship between the Doctor and Sarah shifts just a bit - the first two parts are all about reconnecting characters and showcasing that Doctor/Companion forever bond and friendship - and it’s so gradual and subtle and well done and this thing doesn’t even really GET shippy until the end of the second part and even then it’s juuuust hinting at what’s to come AND THEN when part four comes and blows your mind it’s like OMG WOAH INTENSE. AND IT DOESN'T EVEN REALLY GET PHSYCAL! THAT'S HOW GOOD IT IS.
So yeah, I recommend it. If you're even the slightest Doctor/Sarah Jane fan, it is TOTALLY worth a read.
Part One - Silver and Gold |
