Ryan likes Donnie Darko, so?

amadrabbit said, "someone needs to write a story where Ryan is obsessed with Donnie Darko and when he meets Alex, he completely freaks out. :D and, maybe it didn't quite turn into exactly that but I wrote it in, like, twenty minutes. It's unbeta'd and probably inaccurate (date wise) in a lot of places, but enjoy anyway!

Ryan likes Donnie Darko, so? What's the big deal? He liked to watch it after he got home from school, before band practice, Brendon had to watch it in order to be in the band (he accidentally let it slip that he’d never seen the movie during the audition and obviously after that, his guitar playing skills and Gollum impression weren't enough). At the time, Ryan wasn't about to admit that after the first time he had seen the movie he had gained this huge crush over Seth Devlin/Alex Greenwald. He'd pause and rewind the movie every time he saw Alex's face. But he's not going to admit it. He'd pause it and rewind it and maybe stick his hand down his pants every time Alex so much as came on screen. But he wasn't going to admit it.

After that it seemed that he was hearing Alex Greenwald everywhere. He had done some research on the actor and found out that he was in a band; Phantom Planet, and Ryan proceeded to looking up the band and hoping to find at least one show near him. He didn't find any shows but he did find a CD: Phantom Planet Is Missing, and he had to have it. He looked everywhere for it but Ryan couldn't even find it for sale on the internet. After a year or so he gave up.

But one day he was wandering through some little indie music shop with Spencer and he was looking through the P's section (looking over his shoulder in case Spencer catches him looking for some Papa Roach) and there it was. Fuck yes! Ryan screamed internally. He also found Phantom Planet's newest CD (that Ryan hadn't known about, what the fuck?): The Guest. Ryan was beside himself with excitement but he wasn't about to show it. He called out to Spencer and said they were leaving. Spencer asked Ryan what he had bought and Ryan just shrugged and said, "Just some CDs."

When they got back to Ryan's house Ryan told Spencer that he had to clean up before his dad got home and Spencer believed him and went home. Ryan climbed up the stairs to his room, locked his door and pulled the CDs from the plastic bag. He opened them hurriedly and placed The Guest in his boom box. He pressed play and lay on his bed, listening to one of the best voices he's heard in a while. And maybe he stuck his hand down his pants. And maybe he came, twice, his breathy noises muffled under Alex's voice. Maybe, but he won't admit it.

And here they are now, singed to the same label as Phantom Planet (sure, Panic at the Disco was signed before them, but it doesn't matter to Ryan. Alex Fucking Greenwald!) and Panic is headlining the Honda Civic Tour. They have meetings and in those meetings they're told who will be opening for them. They hear the Hush Sound and Brendon practically beams (he may have a tiny crush on Greta, but if anyone tells Greta, Brendon will make sure they never sleep again). Motion City Soundtrack will open also and Ryan thinks, yeah, okay, I can deal with that. But when they announce the last band Ryan feels his heart stop. Phantom Fucking Planet? Ryan sits on the other end of the table, wide eyed and slack jawed. Brendon waves his hand in front of Ryan face and when Ryan finally comes to he's maybe a shaking a little.

Ryan's nervous. He's really fucking nervous. And he shouldn't be. He's played tons of shows, enough to where he shouldn't be shaking like this is his first time picking up a guitar in front of hundreds of fans. But he's not nervous about playing. No, he's nervous because today is the day they are going to meet up with the opening bands. He hasn't had a chance to even look at Alex Greenwald. They've met with The Hush Sound and Motion City a few times, at label parties and whatnot. But he's never met with Alex Fucking Greenwald (Ryan has so affectionately dubbed him in his mind). This is big and Ryan might actually pass out.

When Ryan gets nervous he drinks, and when Ryan drinks bad things happen. He needs to get some alcohol in his system, he tells Pete. Pete's way ahead of him, thrusting something strong smelling into Ryan's hand. Pete laughs, pats Ryan on the shoulder and says, "Go get 'im," in an undeniable slur. Ryan doesn't understand until Pete has pushed him in the direction of the one and only Alex Greenwald.

Ryan's breath catches in his throat and he can hear Pete laughing as he walks away.

"Ryan, right?" Alex says with a buzzed smile on his lips.

Ryan coughs and tries to dislodge the words from his throat.

"Um, yeah - yes. Ryan Ross." Ryan extends his hand and when Alex reaches for it he takes it back and wipes it on his pants. He extends it again with a sheepish smile. Alex quirks and eyebrow at him but shakes Ryan’s hand nonetheless.

"So, what'aya got?" Alex asks nodding to the glass in Ryan's hand.

Ryan blinks and then looks down at his glass. "Oh, uh, I don't know, really. Pete gave it to me."

Alex laughs, light and airy, and Ryan could just die. "I'd be careful with that. I mean, I haven't know Pete for long but I wouldn't take anything that dude gives me."

"Yeah, well, you don't have to know Pete for that long to know he'd do something like that." Ryan blushes as he swirls the drink in his hand. He swirls a little too hard and spills it over his hand, the floor, and on Alex's shoes.

"Oh, man, I'm so sorry!" Ryan says, turning even redder. He grabs some napkins that are sitting on the table that Ryan hadn't noticed before and contemplates getting on his knees and wiping Alex's shoes. Then he realized what his mind had just come up with; On my knees? Ryan's mind groans.

"No, dude, it's fine, really." Alex waves his hand dismissively. "That wouldn't be the worst thing that's been on my shoes."

Ryan laughs, because, well, it's funny. He laughs and subconsciously touches Alex's arm lightly. He notices and immediately pulls his hand away, coughing into his fist. Alex smiles a knowing smile and Ryan hopes he's imagining it.

"You know, Ryan, I think this tour is going to be fun." There's a glint in Alex's eyes that makes Ryan want to pin him to wall and just -

"Yeah, I think so, too." Ryan smiles.

"You're an alright guy, Ryan. We should definitely hang out, outside of touring, you know?" Alex says with intonation in his voice.

Ryan gulps and his face grows hot. "Yeah, I'd like that." He mentally slaps himself over the forehead for sounding like a love struck teenage girl.

"Cool." Alex nods.

Later that night, after Ryan's had more than enough, Alex saunters up to Ryan and slings his long arm over Ryan's boney shoulders.

"Ryan Ross, you are hot." Alex slurs against Ryan's face.

Ryan turns his head and says, "Yeah?"

"Yeah, I've been watching you all night, ever since you spilled your drink on my shoes." Alex grins and tips his beer bottle to his lips.

"Really, now?" Ryan darts his tongue out to lick his lips.

Alex hums. "Yeah. And I happen to know that you've been watching me. Way longer than we've known each other."

"And how's that?" Ryan asks.

"Your friend, Spencer? Spencer has a mighty big mouth." Alex is pressed so close to Ryan and Ryan can smell the alcohol on him. "And he told me that you used to jerk off to me. All. The. Time."

All the booze has left Ryan feeling weightless and confident so he says, "Yeah, that's true," and pushes his mouth on to Alex's. It's hot and sloppy and everyone's probably looking at them but Ryan doesn't care. He's waited too long to do this and he's not about to stop because they're in public. Ryan's a bit of an exhibitionist anyway.

But he's not going to admit it.
