23 June
Attic
Tiercel Manor

Dearest Emily,
I am locked in the attic. Again. It really isn’t my fault this time. I simply said to papa that I thought I would go to town to see if any of the militia would pick up my hankerchief if I happened to drop it. He was so furious at my ‘silliness’ that he quite abruptly locked me in the attic! I tried opening the small window above the old china display case, but the latch seems to have broken off.
On the bright side, however, I’ve found an absolutely perfect pair of satin slippers for your peach gown. The one with the lace bodice. They match the color exactly! It’s uncanny as that particular shade of peach seems hard to find. I will mail them with this letter as soon as father lets me out of the attic.
Have you any news of Lady Diana’s niece, Abby? It’s been the gossip of many a young lady that she was put in the infirmary! Please let me know if this is the case or if it’s possible the story has been grossly exaggerated. I have heard the account so many different ways that it’s hard to guess at which one could be true! Needless to say, that all of them seem to be a farse. I don’t see how anyone could have caught the black death by simply falling into the lake. It is mid-summer after all, everyone is swimming in the lake. Why would a fall into it (opposed to getting in on ones own accord) cause one to catch the plague? Are there dead rats in the lake? If so, you may wish to avoid it at all costs. Another account indicated that she had fainted dead away at the sight of Sir Emerald! I’ve seen him myself, and I do agree he is very amiable, but I do not think his grand appearance would make anyone faint. Dear me. If only I knew what really happened. I shall settle myself to getting the full scoop in your next letter. Please reply with haste so that I may quell my curiousity!
How is you-know-whom? I dare not say his name, as father is quite cross with me at the moment and it’s possible he may read this letter. I won’t say much more about this topic. Of course, if papa did read this letter to you and saw the afore line, he would undoubtedly read more letters of mine. Oh no! Have I cursed myself to have all of my letters to my dearest friend be read by my snooping papa? I sincerely hope not.
Oh! There is the door. Someone is coming in, possibly to let me out. I have got to go. I will mail the slippers and this letter as soon as I get to town.
Always,
Madeline Tiercel
