LOST 6.15 - Across the Sea

So we went back to Craphole Island for one of the four remaining hours left in the series, and boy did we do some traveling... namely some time traveling as we went all the way back to 23 A.D. to finally learn the back story of Jacob and The Man in Black. Naturally, it was confirmed that the two were in fact brothers. We also learned a lot more than that - namely how the Smoke Monster came to be, why there was a giant frozen donkey wheel under the island, and who Adam and Eve are. Due to the linear nature of the episode, the review is being presented in a linear fashion.

The episode opened at sea with evidence of a shipwreck, and a pregnant woman that washed up on the island. She immediately met up with creepy tongue speaking Allison Janney and revealed her name to be Claudia (Funny... everyone was hoping for Rebekah). Janney revealed her presence on the island, like everyone else's presence, was an accident. Claudia then went into labor and gave birth to Jacob... along with The Man in Black. Turns out creepy Earth-Mother Janney didn't really need to see The Man in Black being born because she offed their mother as a result. It also turned out Claudia didn't have a name for The Man in Black all along.

The episode jumped ahead years with Jacob and The Man in Black as boys starting their "game". Turns out Janney has been raising the boys since the murder of their mother, and like Jacob... she had a thing for weaving. Momma Janney had an interesting conversation with The Boy in Black about the game and how he was "special". She also planted in his head that the island "is all that there is", though the boy had his doubts.

On a boar hunting trip, Jacob and The Boy in Black ran across other island inhabitants and promptly freaked out. After being pressed, Janney dropped the bomb that both boys could never hurt each other and then lead them to I guess an energy pocket on the island that prompted the whole "island protector" clause to be established. It can be argued the pocket can be viewed as a Tree of Life/Eden-esque element.

The boys continued to play their "game" until The Boy in Black saw a vision of his dead mother, showing us that The Boy in Black could see the dead and not Jacob. Claudia lead him to a village of inhabitants that came over on the initial shipwreck, thus planting more ideas in The Boy in Black's head. Claudia then dropped the whole maternity bomb, thus giving The Boy in Black even more doubt. The Boy in Black tried to get Jacob to leave with him, and Jacob, being the momma's boy he is, snapped. The Boy confronted Janney about the whole situation. Janney countered with the whole "never leaving the island" angle, but The Boy was all "I'm going to show you!" and left. Jacob then got a confession from Janney about Claudia's death, but she continued to play "the others are bad" angle. Jacob fell victim to the guilt and stayed with Janney.

The episode then jumped years to when Jacob was an adult. He took a visit to see the now Man in Black to continue their "game". MIB revealed he found a way off the island and showed Jacob evidence of the EM power near one of the wells on the island. Jacob returned back to momma with the news, and she wasn't happy. She took a trip down the well to visit with MIB. MIB revealed how he was looking for the energy source she had showed him, and he decided to look under the island. He found it, and we got evidence of the creation of the donkey wheel. Momma didn't like that and ended up trying to off MIB by ramming him against the stone wall.

Momma Janney went to get Jacob and brought him back to the source of the light. Janney made Jacob the new protector and told him never to go down there. She then brought out the wine bottle and gave Jacob a taste... thus confirming his role as the guardian. Jacob initially had serious doubts and found out, like the other candidates, he never had a choice. We shifted back to the Man in Black, out of the well which was covered and destroyed. He then saw his village burned to the ground and everyone dead... thus cementing his rage.

The final segment opened with cryptic words: "A storm is coming". Janney made it back to her home, which, by the way, were the caves, and found the black and white stones. She was then promptly murdered by The Man in Black. Jacob lost it and proceeded to beat the tar out of MIB and then brought him to the energy source. Jacob then tossed him into the cave... thus creating the Smoke Monster. MIB's body, which wasn't needed any more, eventually washed up and Jacob brought it home. He brought it home to the cave to rest by the body of their mother... thus giving us Adam and Eve. We ended with Jacob's guilt.

Three hours remain... all connected to the finale. One hour Tuesday... Two hours on Sunday. I don't care what people have said about this season. I'm going to miss this show dearly when it's done.
