My Week in England

Oct 30, 2006 17:04

My week back home in England was fantastic, and I wish more than anything that I was back there right now.

I flew home last Tuesday and as my flight was at 9:10am, it meant I had to get up at 4am to make sure I was ready and that I got to the airport on time! I was so tired but I think sheer excitement about going home kept me going.

The flight itself was ok. Lubeck airport is really crap though, it’s just a big shed and there isn’t even a duty free shop! How crap is that, it’s one of the best bits of going to an airport! The landing was a bit dodgy too - the plane didn’t descend slowly, it went straight down which was a bit scary! I was so excited when I landed at Stanstead though to be amongst British people and actually be in Britain! The first thing I did was go to Smiths and buy a newspaper, Closer magazine and a bag of crisps just because you can’t do that in Germany.

I had a little bit of trouble with my trains. I was supposed to get 11:25am train to Peterborough and then a connecting one at Peterborough to Doncaster. As my tickets were booked for a particular train, it meant I could only get on those ones. However, the 11:25am train was cancelled which meant missing my connection at Peterborough as I had to wait until 12:25pm for the next one. Gutted. All I wanted to do was get home but I was kept waiting around Stanstead for just over two hours! GNER were really good about me missing my connection though and let me just get on the next one without any extra charge. After all the faffing around I finally got into Hull at around 5pm! Such a long day I know!

It was good seeing Andy waiting at the station for me and to be in his arms again - it sounds cheesy I know but it’d hard being apart. We went back to his as I was knackered and just caught up -lol- it felt so good just being together. The feeling you get when you’ve been apart and then re-united again is indescribable but it’s amazing! We went out to Wetherspoons for tea that night. Before going to Haworth for a few drinks and games of pool! It’s weird but it felt so good just to be able to go sit in a pub and juts have a few drinks and chat. Sure, you can do it in Germany, but it just doesn’t have that same feeling or atmosphere as a good British pub. We left at around 11pm as, as you can imagine, I was pretty tired!

On Wednesday Andy had a lecture at university and then he was playing football afterwards so I went shopping!! And then back home to Goole to see my family. I just headed straight to Primark. I’d missed it so much, they don’t have an equivalent in Germany which I think they should! I spent £45.50 on a pair of boots, a pair of shoes, a bag, three jumpers, a pair of jeans and some gloves! Being back home was so good too. My parents had just finished decorating their front room which looked great. You can’t beat some of your mum’s home cooking neither. Whilst I was back home, I got the urge to dye my hair so I went to Savers and bought some black hair dye as my Mum said she’d do it for me! It looked a bit gothic at first but now it’s faded a bit it looks really nice! Whilst I was uptown buying some hair dye, I couldn’t resist buying even more clothes and spent a further £23 in Select (chavvy I know but they have some really nice things!) on a jumper dress and a really nice shirt.

I came back to Andy’s at around 8:30pm because we were going out to AU night at Asylum. It was kind of weird being back at the union after working there for nearly two years despite everything being exactly the same! Well apart from the bar staff, I knew about two people because they were all new. We were with Andy’s friends from football for most of the night which was a bit weird at first but we ended up having a really good night as they were so funny! Plus, a few of them had their girlfriends out too. John kept on trying to get me and his girlfriend Hannah to “lez up!” -lol- which we didn’t. I also met Tony’s new girlfriend Jo. She was really nice. I shouldn’t really like her seeing as I am supposed to be Colette’s friend but seeing as she hasn’t shown any interest in me, I’m not going pretend to be to loyal to her. I was rather drunk that night and so proud that I could drink beer!

I really suffered the next day though when I had the hangover from hell. I was spewing up pretty much all day and couldn’t keep anything, not even water down. I had the worst stomach cramps ever too. It was like period pain but a million times worse. It really did feel like I was dying! Andy had no sympathy for me either and jus kept laughing at me, which is not very nice -lol- By about 3pm I felt well enough to venture into town and did a little bit more shopping before going for a meal at May Sum with Andy. Ever since coming to Hamburg, I have a craving for Chinese all the time. I don’t know what it is but because of it, I dragged Andy to May Sum for the all you can eat Chinese buffet. I was starting to really get my appetite back too so all you can eat sounded great! We got too full too quickly though and didn’t actually eat all that much!

We were both pretty tired from having a late night on Wednesday night and so didn’t really feel like doing anything Thursday night so we just stayed in and watched TV and snuggled up in bed. I miss those kinds of moments whilst I’m away. I used to take them for granted so much but now I know life is too short for that.

We went into town again on Friday and I bought even more clothes from Primark, some leopard print pumps and a grey-ish coloured jumper dress. Andy was supposed to get some new jeans but he couldn’t be bothered! He annoys me so much when he won’t buy new clothes even though he needs them! Apparently he has to be in the mood for shopping! I saw Colette when we got off the bus and was walking back to Andy’s. I asked her when was a good time to come round so that we could chat and catch up and she said that I could come round after she’d finished university for the day and would give me a ring when she was done.

Whilst I was waiting for her to phone, Andy and I went down to Gardeners for a few games of pool, which for some reason I actually managed to win! We played the “best of three” and I actually won two games! Well, I won one on my own and the other, I only won by default because Andy potted the white when he potted the black! It still felt good to win as it’s kind of an ongoing joke between us! After my victory we went back to Andy’s where he cooked me a delicious chicken tikka for my tea! I’ve never tried curry before, it always looked really nice but I always thought it would be too spicy but it was delicious!

Colette hasn’t phoned by this point so I thought I’d just get a shower and get ready to go out and then just call round. She can be quite scatty so I just thought she’d maybe forgotten. Anyway, I went round and Charlotte answered the door and Colette wasn’t even in, and she never did call or text me whilst I was back despite me making the effort. It was really good to see Charlotte; we caught up a little bit on what’s going on in the house and what’s happening with me in Germany. She would’ve come out with me on Friday night but she’d already arranged to meet up with a mate who was coming down from Leeds University. Her and Rosie went out Saturday night to Asylum and invited me but I’d already arranged to go and stay at home for the weekend so I could spend some time with my family. Hopefully, I’ll get to see her when I’m back for Christmas though.

Anyway, back to Friday night. Andy and I went to Haworth for a few drinks before going Piper. We queued ages to get in Piper too. It was one out, one in but when we eventually did get inside, it wasn’t even that busy. We got served straight away and got seats! It was good to hear some indie music; I’ve missed it whilst I’ve been away. They don’t really play it in the clubs here, it’s mainly proper dance music and R and B. We didn’t get too drunk though as I really did not want to have a hangover again!

We went to see Andy’s grandma on Saturday, she is so lovely bless her and I love going round! She made us some dinner bless her. She’s been ill lately as her white blood cells have been quite high so she needed treatment to get them back down to a normal level. She was telling us all about Andy’s cousin’s little baby, Harvey who is absolutely gorgeous! He gets me all broody -lol- but don’t worry, I’ll definitely be waiting!

After we left Andy’s grandma’s we to Primark so that I could exchange a pair of jeans which I’d bought as they were too small, before getting the train back to mine. We’d just bought our tickets and sat down on the train when I checked to my phone to see that I’d gotten a message from my mum saying that she was in Hull with my brother, so we got off the train and went back into the shopping centre to find her! My little brother Jordan is so funny! We went into one shop so that he could try some trainers up but it was really warm so my mum said “come on let’s get out of here, it’s too hot.” So Jordan replied “it’s because I’ve entered the room!” -lol- Then we went into TJ Hughes and saw a huge plasma screen and he shouted “ooohhh get a bit of porn on that for the lads!” which is a quote from Max and Paddy! He’s one of the people I miss the most whilst I’m away. He wants to go to university too because he wants to move abroad like me!

Saturday evening was pretty uneventful. We just sat and watched TV with my mum and dad. It might seem like nothing but those are the kinds of moments which I miss. I love it when the weather starts to turn colder and you have to wrap up warmer but it means cosy nights in, snuggled up, kissing and laughing.

We didn’t get up until really late on Sunday, I think it was around 1pm. It’s so nice though to lay snuggled up warm in bed, smelling the Sunday roast cooking downstairs. Sunday was definitely one of the days I was most looking forward too as it meant a proper Sunday dinner and no-one cooks a better one than my mum! We only left the house once on Sunday and that was to get some wrapping paper so that I could wrap my brother’s birthday present. I love those kinds of days though; proper lazy Sunday’s which are even better in winter!

I spent the majority of Monday at home too. It was Jordan’s birthday so I wanted to be there for him even though I don’t think he was that bothered! He liked his present, some Spongebob boxers and a Spongebob bowl and cup! He had invited his best friend Alex round, and then his girlfriend Brooklyn round as well as my cousin Lara! Him and Brooklyn were trying to get Alex and Lara to go out -lol- Andy had to leave earlier on Monday because he had a lecture and Jordan thought I was going with him and he got a little bit upset because he thought I was going before he had chance to give me some of his birthday cake bless him! I think he does miss me when I’m gone!

Despite flying back to Germany on Tuesday, I still went out on Monday night! I had a really good night too! Andy and I first went to Mission and had a couple of drinks in there. We bumped into Rosie in Mission which was good, I was glad she was out as she is a great laugh, it’s a shame we only got to know each other at the end of the second year. We had a bit of a chat in Mission but then her friends were going into Waterfront so I just said I’d meet her in there. Andy and I went up to the R and B floor first in Waterfront and were reminiscing about how we got together and the first year of university. I can’t believe I’m in my third year now. Before you know it, I’ll have graduated. We then went down to the indie floor where I bumped into Rosie again and we had a good old dance! We ended up getting a taxi back with her and her friend Charlie and spent ages in the take-away with them too! All in all it was a great night even if it was a little bittersweet as I knew it was my last night in Hull.

I woke up about at about 7am on Tuesday morning feeling like shit, which I was dreading because of my journey back to Hamburg. I took a big drink of water though and went back to sleep. When I finally woke up to get up at around 10:30am I felt fine just a bit tired.

It was horrible packing all my things together. I hated it. I just wanted to stay there forever. I really didn’t want to come back. I managed to remain strong though. Well, until I got to the train station and had to say goodbye to Andy. I cried even though I must’ve looked like such a fool. It’s even harder knowing the fact that he might not have time to come out and see me before Christmas because of university deadlines and exams. It means I might not see him until 21st December when I go back for Christmas which will be incredibly hard.

My train journey down to London wasn’t too bad. I accidentally booked first class tickets -lol- as they were the cheapest option at the time! It was great though! I had the internet and everything, if it’s cheap next time, I’ll definitely book first class again! I think I looked a little out of place though! My train from Peterborough to Stanstead was cancelled again which meant I had to wait at Peterborough for an hour for the next one. Luckily, when I booked my train tickets, I’d allowed for cancellations so I got to Stanstead in plenty of time for checking in etc.

The security queue was so long though and I meant I didn’t have any time for any duty free shopping which was a bit annoying! Stanstead has a duty free French Connection and Kurt Geiger amongst other shops. I had to run to my gate too and I didn’t realise how far away they were from the main building and people had already started queuing for boarding.

The flight back to Lubeck and the journey back to where I’m staying in Hamburg were fine. I had to fight the tears back though whilst walking from the tube station to my house. As soon as I got in though, the tears came out. I just couldn’t help it. I really didn’t want to be here. I just wanted to be back home again. I phoned Andy in tears and he was great bless him. I just wish I could’ve had a cuddle though.

Since I’ve been back things have been ok. I have mainly just been out and about with Harriet catching up. Yesterday we went to Sternschanze to use the internet before going to get some food and then for a few drinks in Oma’s. The guy in Oma’s recognises us now and knows us as the English fremdsprachassisstenin and he gave us two free shots of this really nice strawberry stuff. It was gorgeous but when we asked him what it was, he wouldn’t tell us!

We met up again today back in the internet café because I needed to apply to jobs in France and Harriet to prepare some lessons. I applied to work the holiday company PGL so fingers crossed for me. After that we went and had some dinner in Frank and Freie where I had the most gorgeous baked potato which thankfully didn’t come with sour cream like they usually do here in Germany. We both then went to Alex where we sat and wrote some letters/postcards. Chris also joined us in Alex which was nice. He’s a nice guy even if we don’t really have a lot in common. I really do think he’s after Harriet though!

I had tea round at Harriet’s flat tonight which was fun! We cooked some noodles and had them with some sweet and sour sauce we bought from the supermarket, and some vegetables. It was really, really nice which we were both quite surprised at considering it was a bit of a mish mash of things! We also shared a bottle of the cheapest rose wine ever! It was 10% strength -lol- and was only €1.89! Complete bargain! Despite feeling very homesick, it’s things like that which cheer me up! Harriet’s flatmate is becoming ever stranger. She stole some biscuits from Harriet’s room and also some bottles that she had saved up to take to the bottle bank. She also got really offended that I didn’t say bye to her when I left! Needless to say, Harriet is looking for somewhere new to live! Luckily she thinks she may have found somewhere.

I think I’m going to leave this entry here now as I’ve borrowed Mean Girls from Harriet and think I’m going to go and watch it!
