Harriet and I decided we wanted to do something different this weekend so we cultured ourselves and went to an art exhibition and the Hamburg History museum.

The art exhibition we saw a photographic one which was in the Deictorhallen. It was really interesting. The photos ranged from the really amazing, which just make you want to grab a camera and take photos yourself to the quite absurd! We spent just as long in the book shop next to it as we did in the exhibition as there were so many interesting books.

The history museum was quite fascinating too, although in parts quite boring, as the history of ships doesn’t really do anything for me! The fashion through the ages and the Hamburg in the 20th century exhibitions were really interesting though. They had reconstructions of various situations such as a bedroom of student or young person through the ages, a war bunker, a typical shop during the wars years and various types of living rooms/lounges. There a big focus on the war years which was particularly interesting as being English, we only ever learn about it from our own point of view. It was interesting to see that we caused just as much devastation and hurt as what the Germans caused us. Hamburg was practically destroyed in bombings which lasted for over three days. There was also a big Beatles exhibition as they were a huge part of the Hamburg music scene during the sixties playing here often before they became international superstars. There was so much we didn’t see as we ran out of time but we are definitely going to go back.

We are continuing our culture tour tomorrow by joining the library and possibly registering with the adult learning school to do a course seeing as we couldn’t do one at the university.

After all that culture we needed to relax -lol- so we spent over an hour in an internet café before going for a drink in bar and then finally heading home where I’m writing this. I’m quite tired though so I think I’ll end it here.

Days until it’s all over: 143
Days until I go home: 9
