O HAI people who are still asleep *is jealous*
Stupid swine flu has fucked with my sleep so much. Curse The Swine!
Ok, so last night (ahh, this night?) I read an awesome
rant by
bookshop about how homoerotic subtext has become an easy way of not portraying real same-sex relationships. God, the way they bring it up as joke is so annoying in some ways (looking at you spn) no matter how much I honestly enjoy those scenes
She mentions the example of House in particular. House/Wilson was so frustrating because it was one of the most obvious (second only to Sam and Dean but except, you know, without the incest) and the most canonically possible slash ships. The writers knew that a chunk of the audience could definitely see the potential and they kept on teasing us with tonnes and tonnes of subtext. I admit that I LOVED the subtext (would I be any kind of slasher if I didn't?) but I really feel that it should of actually happened on the show. Eventually I grew tired of the show when the plots started feeling too rote even for House and when they decided that Huddy? ahh Chuddy? - well whatever it was called would become the focus. Don't get me wrong, I love Cuddy to death but that relationship sucks and it makes Cuddy less awesome - I loved it when she'd dickslap House.
Why didn't they go there? I know that we still live in an age where there is still a tonne of homophobia out there and the networks/Hollywood don't want to go that far out on a limb. I just really really wished that they'd actually pushed the envelope and trusted their audience to accept what was happening. Aja makes a really good point but saying it'd be something like someone you'd thought of as heterosexual coming out of the closet.
Here's a prize for reading this rant:
