Harry took the recording seriously, and Stan didn't. Typical day at the "office" for Harry Caul. Stan was a helpful second hand and that's why Harry kept him, even when Stan's wisecracks and disregard for the seriousness of their cases got under Harry's skin. His one wish was for Stan to realize they weren't high-tech gossip reporters, that they weren't in this to gratify any curiosity they had about other people's lives. Harry wasn't a wiretapper for those reasons, at least.

With a reluctant push of a button, Harry turned off the equipment for the day and began to head towards the elevator. Stan had zoomed off earlier. Where to, Harry didn't know. His only concern was that Stan return the next day, and that he not betray any of their secrets to -- well, anyone.

Harry stepped into the elevator and closed his eyes as it began to move, opening them only when the elevator came to a sudden halt. And then it wasn't an elevator his eyes opened to, but a bright, circular, white room --

Harry liked to think he had everything figured out, that he had everything so under control that he had completely evaded the unexpected. That never was the case, and it wasn't the case now. He had no idea where he was, and he had no idea how he had came here.
