Manip Tutorial

for lemomina who asked how I made the Sylar/Elle Carnie banner. :)

I use Corel Photo Paint because I've always used it and I'm lazy to learn new software but I'm sure it can be done with photoshop, just the names of the tool are probably different (I have the italian version anyway).
I hope you'll understand anyway.

First step is obviously find the right pic. I used this, taken from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, was perfect because fit Lydia's body almost perfectly, minus the lights: Kbell's skin was too much "white" so I played a little with the brightness/contrast regulation, to have something more similar to Lidia skin color in the carnie pic.

I flipped it horizontally and then start to select just the part I wanted with the mask tool, using the brush with the blurred edge

I love Corel because when you are selecting, it make it really visible, as you can see. the reddish part is the "unselected". I've learn that is better make a raw selection in this phase, no need to be too near the edge, I'll refine it after.
Now you can either invert the selection and delete the rest or, as I've done, just copy the selection...

.... and paste it in the other pic as a new object (if I am correct, in photoshop it's called layer or level), setting its opacity between 50% and 60% for the moment. This way I could move it and place it in the exact place.

Suggestion: when you enlarge o make smaller the overlapping object, always use the corners of the pic, so it keeps the right proportion.

When you've found the right place, before doing something else, duplicate the layer/level. So if something goes wrong (and it does LOL) you can always have a base to restart with. In corel I just select the objec/level and with right click -> duplicate and swith it off (just click on the eye in the level sidebar) and set back opacity to 100% or something less. I used at 90% for Kbell level this time, so that the edges where a little more blurry and the effect was better.

Now I need to refine the edges and border of Kbell, using a brush that make transparent where ever you touch. I switched off any other layer and with patient I've "cleared" kbell's face and body.

I liked Lidia's long hair so I decided to make transparent part of Kbell sleeve, and, as you can see, I made transparent part of her hair to make Lidia's hair (the part almost horizontal on the shoulder) visible.

but the effect was not so good (I *deleted* too much Kbell), so I simply selected part Kbell hair in the duplicate level and placed above kbell level.

At this point I have just one problem: Kbell pic is too short I needed something to cover Lidia's body (also kbell arm is floating LOL), so I added the carnival logo on, overlapping = normal, opacity 83%

And that's all.
