[Picspam] Stewart & Colbert: A Musical Interlude

May 13, 2011 15:59

I was actually already planning on making this, though I had no idea when I was going to post it, BUT, as it turns out, today is Mr. Colbert's birthday (Happy Birthday, good sir!), so it just seems like the perfect opportunity to share it.

So with that in mind, I present you with a very special Musical Interlude to my ongoing Stewart/Colbert Picspam of Epic Awesome.

STEPHEN COLBERT'S EPIC SONG AND DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA((Though it says "Song and Dance", it's mostly just "song"... because, seriously, adding the moments where just dances and doesn't sing would make this post impossibly huge. The title still fits, though, because, as you will see, Mr. Colbert tends to dance quite a lot when he sings XD))

If you've seen Parts 1 & 2, then a) you're awesome; b) I'm sorry for making you lose those precious moments of your life :P; and c) you may have noticed that I have a special fondness for the moments when Stephen Colbert sings and dances around, so making a picspam about those very moments just seemed like the logical next step. And since I'm trying to keep the picspam in a sort of chronological order, all the moments added here are from after Colbert left The Daily Show. This is not, however, a complete list. There are several other moments which I have not included, but I guess you can't have everything, can you? ;P

NOTE: Again, I've added links to all these videos. However, a couple of these moments are not available on the Colbert Report website and come from streaming websites such as YouTube, so I don't know how long they're going to be up.

OK, NOW ON TO THE LIST!
(click the pictures to watch the videos)

♫ I'm wide open, so pass that ball my way
And I'll dribble that sh*t right up the parquet
Nothing but net as I show you how I flow
Swish motherf**ker, now listen to me blow! ♫
*sporffle* Heee! This is so crazy that I can't help but love it. This was made to poke fun at Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's documentary about the influences that hip-hop and jazz had on basketball, and I just absolutely loved the title. XD

Kareem: Colbert is back, but he's not alone.
Stephen: Got Abdul-Jabbar and my saxophone.
Kareem: Giving props to Miles and John Coltrane.
Stephen: Kareem appeared in the movie Airplane!
Kareem: BeBop.
Stephen: And hip-hop.
Kareem: Some lay-ups.
Stephen: A dunk.
Kareem: And now we will jam like Thelonious Monk.

*sporffles again* The best thing about this is two things:
1) how tiny Colbert looks compared to Kareem;
2) Colbert's major fail with the saxophone at the end. LOL! I always can't help but smile when I watch him. He's even worse here than he was on the first Jazzebration. :)

♫ Every time I see you, I think of you
Every time I'm near you, I think of you
I think of you when I dream of you, when I'm taking pictures of you
I think of you when I'm in a blimp looking down from up above you
You know I'm missing you
My mind is kissing you
I'm right behind you now, Charlene
Waiting, watching, oh so close
I'm right behind you now, Charlene
You'll never be alone again, no ♫
Colbert's first true musical moment on the show, celebrating his obsession love for the ever-so-mysterious Charlene.
This may have been the first, but it remains one of my favorite songs he ever performed, it's so ridiculously stalker-ish! Plus, the guyliner and that 80's attire of his (and the hair! OMG!) just make me love this even more!

And if you want proof of how awesome and CLASSIC Charlene is, the videogame Rock Band 2 has it as a playable song. Here is Colbert himself, rocking it out (when was the last time YOU had a song on Rock Band 2, huh? HUH???):

♫ This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me ♫
Aw, this was a rather sweet opening for the show. :) I wish he'd do this more often.
((And oh boy! Remember the old opening credits? I almost forgot about them completely...))

♫ I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs ♫
This one was his first, "real" duet (sorry, Kareem!) and it was absolutely lovely! His voice and Manilow's complimented each other surprisingly well, I have to say... Also, when I watched this, it was the first moment when I genuinely thought "Hey! That Colbert guy can sing!"... And it happened shortly after I started looking into the show and getting interested in it, so it definitely helped in making me the insufferable fangirl I am today. ;)

♫ He's singin' in Korean
He's singin' in Korean
He's singin' in Korean
He's singin'... IN KOREEAAAAN ♫
I wanted to transcribe the bits that are actually in Korean, but I don't know Korean, so I couldn't. I also can't tell if he did a good job of speaking Korean or not because, again, I don't know Korean. And that's enough of me saying "Korean".
Anyway, all of that doesn't stop me from loving this video, though, because HA! Oh, how I love it! Colbert trying to look all cool, the sunglasses over his actual glasses, the dance moves... And it gets even better once you watch the video that inspired it (HERE). Seriously, watch Rain's video (RAAAAAAAIIIIINNNNN!!!!! *shakes fist*) before watching this one, it gets just so much better, even if you watch just the first minute or so.

What is that? You're asking for an extra dose of awesome? Why, surely,it's my pleasure!
Shortly after He's Singin' in Korean was released, Rain came on the Report and they had their infamous Colbert/Rain Dance-Off, aka "He's Dancin' in Korean". Watch it, it's pretty epic. ;)

♫ They all said we'd never get together
They laughed at us and how!
Ho, ho, ho!
Who's got the last laugh now? ♫
I really liked this one! Colbert was fine in it and everything, but in all honesty, I just really enjoyed the song. I know it must be a classic of some sort, but I had never heard it before and thought it was really good and funny. It seems like such a fun song to sing... "Ho, ho, ho! Who's got the last laugh now?" XD

♫ Go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt's Land
Tell ol' Pharaoh
Let my people go ♫
Oh, this episode... This episode... I think any Report fan who's watched it still remembers it. This was a special episode for a couple of reasons, not only because it was during the Writer's Strike OF DOOM, but also because Stephen spent a great deal of the time talking about his father, and then interviewed Andrew Young, who knew his father. For those of you not familiar with the backstory here, Stephen's father and two of his brothers died in a plane crash when he was very young. So yeah, you really couldn't help but feel a tug on your heartstrings when he asked the ambassador about him...
It was all quite touching, and it ended with Stephen, both guests, and a gospel choir, singing a song dedicated to his writers, who were still on strike.

Stephen: She's mine, John.
John: No, she's mine, Stephen.
Stephen: You wanna fight about it?
John: I'm a lover, not a fighter.
Stephen: I will kick your prom king a**.
John: Don't waste your time.
Both: The doggone girl is mine...
I have to admit, I had never heard of John Legend before he came on the Report (yeah, I know, it's sad). That said, the fact that he's a total it-getter, seemed like a nice guy, and had a really good voice to boost just made me like him almost instantly. Plus, he had a duet with Colbert. That helped too. ;)
One of the things I love the most about this one is the fact that Colbert's outfit matches Paul McCartney's outfit from the cover of the album where this song came from, which, I'm ashamed to admit, I only know because someone pointed it out to me. :P

♫ Hey! It's another Christmas song
Yay! Another oft' returning
Royalty-earning Christmas song
I've got plenty more, so go buy a modem
Log on to iTunes and pay to download 'em
Pay! For another Christmas song ♫
When I first heard about Colbert's Christmas special, it all just seemed too good to be true. It's like the writers brought together everything that I love just to please me. It's like they went "How can we possibly make Di even more obsessed with Colbert than she already is? OH! I KNOW! Let's have a Christmas special where Colbert gets to sing and dance around as much as he wants!!"...
This song was a really good one to start things off with. It's fun, it's bouncy... Even my mom (who's not particularly a fan) was singing along. I also love it because I never thought I'd hear the words "ad infinitum" in a song... lol OH! So much fun!

Jon: We have latkes.
Stephen: What are they?
Jon: Potato pancakes. We have dreidels.
Stephen: What are they?
Jon: Wooden tops. We have candles.
Stephen: What are they?
Jon: THEY ARE CANDLES!
And when we light them, oh the fun it never stops.
"You know what, guys? The song and dance is great, but I don't think Di is obsessed enough. What can we do to remedy this?" "I KNOW! Let's add Jon Stewart and make him sing together with Stephen! OH! And let's also add a very, very slashy moment at the end so that we can be SURE she'll flail like a mad person!" "AWESOME! Genius! Let's do it!"
Yup, this is exactly how they did it and no one will convince me otherwise.
I mean, COME ON! THIS IS JON AND STEPHEN, TOGETHER, SINGING!!! And adorable so! Seriously, how adorable is Jon in this? I just want to squish him! Plus, this is pretty much one of their banters turned to song, so yes, it's an instant "love" from me! ♥

♫ As I walk through this wicked world
Searching for light in the darkness of insanity, oh yeah
I ask myself, is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?
And each time I feel like this inside
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? *ROAR*
What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding? ♫
Aw, this was such a sweet song, and with an ensemble that can only be described as "a whole bunch of different people together". XD
I have to admit that my favorite moment of the whole thing is when the bear (who sounded a lot like Elvis Costello, interestingly enough) starts approaching Stephen and then just starts singing and dancing. lol So random! (And that roar was really cute XD)
I did find interesting, though, that in most songs of the special, and this one in particular, Colbert's voice was a lot higher than it is when he usually sings... It's a bit weird, actually... but it did fit well with all the other voices in this song, so no real complaints here. ♥
OK, there actually is one: WHY NO JON STEWART??? :P

♫ A redeemer and a savior, an obese man giving toys for good behavior
The faith in what might be and the hope that we might see
The answer to all sorrow in a box beneath the tree
Find them foolish, sentimental
Well, you're clearly none too bright, so we'll be gentle
Don't even try to start vaguely conceiving
Of all the much worse things to believe in ♫
I really, really love this one. Colbert and Costello get along really well, and I really love the lyrics. It's definitely my favorite from the Christmas special (yes, it beats the Jon Stewart one. I know! THE SHOCK! ;P), mostly because it's more serious than the others in the special (Peace, Love & Understanding was pretty serious, too, but Elvis Costello was a bear... so... yeah, not that serious :P).

♫ Lip service - well, that's all you'll ever get from me
Well, how could you believe I would take you seriously?
With your cheap rewards, your blackmail, and your comical rage
Just remember you'll only be the boss so long as you pay my wage ♫
It's the third time in a row that we have Colbert and Costello singing together. That has got to be some sort of record...
I actually think it's just really sweet that Elvis Costello went on the show to do a song, but he had a sore throat and, instead of just skipping a musical number altogether, he asked if Stephen could sing one of his songs for him. ♥

♫ I love New York, king of all the cities
Lived up by the Guggenheim 'til I got some kiddies
Moved to Connecticut - bye, George Pataki!
Volvo to the dry-cleaners, pickin' up my khakis
Shopping mall is close, my community is gated
My shorties are all private school educated
Home theatre system, 60-inch plasma
Clean suburban air, much better for my asthma
Still hit the city, Time Square, I keep it real
Hard Rock Café for their appetizer deal
M&M Store, Disney Store, I'm in heaven
I own this town from 41st to 47 ♫
STEPHEN COLBERT IS RAPPING! YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID!
This is quite possibly my favorite of Colbert's musical numbers on his show, not only because his rapping was awesome ("Home theatre system, 60-inch plasma / clean suburban air, much better for my asthma"), but because of his awesome dance moves! lol Even the band was enjoying watching him dance, it was fantastic! The pinstripe suit hoodie was a nice touch too. ;)

[Although... Am I the only one kind of bothered by the fact that the lyrics seem to go "concrete jungle where dreams are made of"? Because it doesn't actually make any sense when you think about it, does it? It's kind of hypocritical of me to complain, I know, but it does bother me...]

♫ I need you so, that I could die
I love you so, and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam ♫
I think it's safe to say that Elvis Costello likes singing with Colbert... Because here we have yet ANOTHER Colbert/Costello duet! And, again, it's really, really sweet.

♫ He's a legend and his name will never die-ah
His name will live forever, just like Sanjaya
If you need a hero, Sully's got the goods
He's even more beloved than Tiger Woods ♫
There are just so many awesome things about this:
1) Colbert, Carell and Stewart together. Singing. And dancing. Hard to beat!
2) The 2-year old references! ("He's hottest than the latest YouTube sensation", cue Tay Zonday singing "Chocolate Rain". LOL Classic!)
3) The dancers. They are AWESOME in their flamboyantness (that's a word, right? Oh, just go with it! ;P) and just so absolutely hysterical!

Jon: You don't care about the gays.
Stephen: That's mostly true.
Jon: You're terrified of Muslims.
Stephen: Well, they scare you too!
Jon: But I would never talk about it, folks would get annoyed.
Stephen: You're a coward!
Jon: Yes, but I'm still emplooooooooooyed...
Jon and Stephen together again! What's not to love? I just love how often Jon gets to sing with Stephen, even though he is not a singer by ANY stretch of the imagination. And I don't mean that with any disrespect, just listen to him singing here and you'll see that I'm right! He did eventually "get into it", but that beginning was a bit painful to hear... (lol I love you, Jon! Don't ever change!)
Fun fact: On the press conference right after the Rally, when asked what was the most difficult part of the Rally for them to pull off, Stephen immediately answered, giggling and pointing at Jon "I think it was him hitting the high note". ♥ And it's important to note that, even though he laughed at it, Jon did NOT correct him. :P

♫ We'll be drenched in best friend syrup
Whip cream all over your face
We'll lick each other's bowls all clean
In a sticky warm embrace ♫
Jimmy: Are we still talking about ice cream?
Stephen: Just go with it, just go with it.
♫ And when we join together
It's a taste to be proud of
When I pop a scoop of friendship
On your sugar cone of love ♫
Probably one of the sweetest-yet-hilariously-suggestive friendship songs I've ever heard. It's second only to "Two Beavers Are Better Than One" from HIMYM, because you can't really beat that one, I'm sorry (they're "twice the fun", you see! XD).

♫ Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today it is Friday, Friday
We we we so excited, we so excited
We gonna have a ball today
Tomorrow is Saturday and Sunday comes afterwards
I don't want this weekend to end ♫
EPICNESS!
Colbert, Fallon, The Roots, fireworks, auto-tunes, beekeepers, an one-door-only car, a former American Idol, cheerleaders, QR codes, and some random yeti that apparently just happened to be wandering around the place and decided to stop by! There's something for everyone in there! SUCK ON THAT, GLEE!
I really hope Fallon and Colbert work on more things like this over the course of the next 5 months (or is it 4 now?) of their 6-month best friendship. (Is it too much to ask for a "Never gonna give you up" duet?)

Well, that's it for the Musical Interlude! But before we go, I'll leave you with the following clip. I know I said I would only focus on moments after he left The Daily Show, but I just can't let this picspam go by without this important piece of Colbert history:

Alright! Now we're done. :)
I actually came up with it pretty fast, compared to the previous parts, I'm impressed with myself! GO ME! ;P
For those of you who checked it out, I say: YOU'RE AWESOME! *FIST BUMP*
For those of you who haven't, well... it's your loss. ;P *wink wink*

Stay tuned for Part 3, coming... at some point in the foreseeable future. And by "foreseeable" I mean "hopefully before my grandchildren get to college". DI OUT!
