Vid update!

YES! YES! YES!

It seems like I'm finally going to make a video in Final Cut. Months after I purchased Macbeth (Oh, Macbeth), I'm finally going to put it to good use. Though it's not like I haven't been trying, I just haven't been succeeding.

But my Sherlock vid is going good! I've got 1:21 already (ooooh the 1'30 Mark is approaching!), and so far so good. :)

And I have finally used FC enough to know the good and the bad about it when compared with Sony Vegas... For those of you who might be wondering, here's a short list:

The Good:
- LIVE PREVIEW!
Oh my word! I think anyone who uses Vegas knows how difficult it is to get previews, and you end up having to export the file multiple times just so you can preview it. With FC, you don't have to! ♥
- Frame-by-frame edits.
With Vegas, you can actually go through the clips frame by frame, but when you try to cut it, it sometimes gets all wonky and it gets a couple of frames off in the end... With FC, it all works great. :)
- Sound editing.
It's not like you can't edit the sound in Vegas. You can! But unless you have Sound Forge or whatever, you don't have that many options. FC was not thought out to be a sound editing program, but it does have a lot more options and it's a lot more precise than Vegas.
- Photoshop interaction. ♥
This is MAGICAL, guys! When you import psd files onto FC, not only does it work perfectly with them, it actually splits the layers onto multiple tracks, so you can edit each one individually. IT'S AWESOME!!!
- Paste attributes.
Another magic FC feature. If you make one change to a clip and then you want to apply that to another one, you can go with "paste attributes" (you can use it for filters, scale, anything).

The Bad:
- The rendering.
This is not bad, per se, but it is damn annoying. Every time you change anything in your clip, anything at all, you have to wait for it to render so you can preview it. I understand this is not exclusive to FC, most video editing programs are like this, but one of the good things about Vegas is that you don't have to do that (sometimes you get no preview either, but that's not the point).
- FC vs mp3 rivalry.
While FC is good for sound editing, don't ever try importing mp3s to it. It will get really offended.
- Clip by clip settings.
One of the things I loved about Vegas was that you could apply a video filter, color correction, anything, to a whole track rather than having to go through each and every clip. It saved a whooole lot of time. In FC, you have to go one by one. :/
- NO MASKING!
This one I'm not sure, I feel like I'm not looking hard enough... I mean, it's the one aspect where FC falls waaay behind Vegas. It simply does not have any masking tools. I mean, there is one, but it's an 8-point thing that doesn't do much, you can't actually draw a mask like you can with Vegas. That was a bit of a let-down.
But I suppose you could use Photoshop in this case and it would work a lot better than in Vegas, but still...

The Ugly:
- WAY TOO MANY SETTINGS, OMG!!!!
This neither good, nor bad. Actually, it's both at the same time, 'cause while it's great that you have a whole lot of options to choose from and you can get any results you want, there are WAY TOO MANY OF THEM! So you don't know where to start and you get lost many times.
But I'm guessing it's just a matter of getting used to it...

This is what I've managed to gather so far, I'm sure there are a lot more.
Actually, I *know* there are a lot more, but these are the things that stood out to me the most about FC...

I just thought I'd share it in case anyone is curious about it. :)

Anyway, vidding, good, YAY! ♥

projects, beware the 1'30 curse!, tv: sherlock, vidding, computer: macbeth, vidding: final cut
