LJ Client Programs?

I remember, when I first joined LJ, the FAQ or welcoming message or whatever recommended that you use a client program to access the site, rather than just browsing to it... but I think that the link was broken or something, so I never bothered to track it down and check it out.

I'm wondering, though, do any of you use these mythical (to me at least) client programs? 
Do they even exist in any usable form? 
Or are they a relic of a bygone era?
