I've been hobbling about for some time with two painful clubs for feet thinking it was caused by my diabetes but now I have discovered it is something a bit more sinister.
When I was young and a aspiring political cartoonist I studied the works of the early masters of the craft and came across a classic that was drawn by James Gilray to describe th
e pain of arthritic gout. In case you don't know what gout is I will try to explain. Broken down to its simplest terms gout is the result or uric acid crystals lodging themselves in the joints and causing severe inflammation a debilitating pain.
I have gout.
In both feet but it is worse in my right foot and as of Saturday I could not walk two feet without the most severe pain I have ever felt in my life. Going three feet is torture.
I am very lucky that the Knights of Columbus Council at Queen of the Apostles Church gave me one of those electric Jazzy chairs. IT really is a god send and makes life so much easier for me now that I can't walk without much difficulty.
Unfortunately this has meant some changes for the kiddies including me serving as Mr. Taxi.
Today my wife had to run the kiddies to school which I have been doing to help her get to work on time in a neighboring city after a rough commute.
Later in the morning I got a call from one of my daughters from her high school to come pick her up because she had a problem. I couldn't do it and I felt really bad and had all kinds of images of her suffering through a load of embarrassment or suffering in pain because I could not play Mr. Taxi and Mr. Mom at the same time. Oh well I guess we all will just have to learn to adjust.
