My LeakyCon Experience

So I’m sure most everybody has been updated on Tweak’s great adventure at LeakyCon, but I am currently bored out of my mind recuperating at my parent’s house and have nothing better to do than to make a very lengthy post about it all…

The day before Leaky, Nitwit and I flew to NYC to meet up with Blubber and Oddment. We had a great time in New York and then caught a bus to Boston the next day. I was able to enjoy a little of LeakyCon on Thursday night. I was glad that I got to see Swish and Flick and some friends.

On Friday morning Oddment, Nitwit, and I made our way down to one session of programming. After that, we grabbed some lunch and did some shopping in Boston. It all gets a little fuzzy for me after lunch and shopping. I remember walking to dinner with the new DH protégé, Susan, and then I remember lots and lots of pain.

Around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning after I nearly went into shock from the pain, Nitwit made the decision to call for an ambulance because I was apparently being stubborn (shocking, I know). The hotel security guard thought I was drunk, the paramedics thought I had the Swine Flu, and food poisoning was briefly considered before we left for the hospital. It seemed like I was in the ER forever. I underwent a CT scan and it was discovered that my large intestines had flipped. Basically, your intestines are held down by ligaments. Mine were not, and no one seemed to know why. My intestines chose Friday night dinner to flip on me (kinda like a kink in a hose) and caused my appendix to be in the completely wrong place. Emergency surgery was needed to fix the problem. This was the scariest thing for me to hear. I had never had any sort of surgery before or for that matter, had never been knocked out for any sort of medical procedure. And to top it all off, my parents were miles away in Indiana.

Needless to say, I made it through the surgery. I no longer have the right side of my large intestine or my appendix. My parents quickly flew out to Boston and arrived shortly after I was brought into recovery. I stayed in the Boston hospital for nearly a week and flew back to my parent’s house in Indiana a week ago today. I’m currently recuperating and tiring to get my strength back.  I’m doing well, but at the same time I’m extremely frustrated and sick of being sick. I want so badly to be healed and back in my own home. *sigh*

I couldn’t have done it without the rest of the DH. Nitwit stayed with me the entire time, held my hand through the ER, made phone calls to my parents and friends back home, and helped to keep me as calm as I could be in the situation. Blubber and Oddment were also there for me and helped immensely. I couldn’t find better best friends if I tried.

DH and Todd, thank you for helping me to find the silver lining in all of this. If this had to happen, I’m glad it did so when I had all of my best friends around me. If I were back at home, I most likely would not have called an ambulance on my own and would have just passed out from the pain and no one would have known. I’m also thankful that I was taken care of at top notch hospital. I have been told my many people that Tufts New England Medical Center was the best place around. The doctors and nurses there were exceptional. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for all of the kind words, encouragement, and get well wishes. I love you all!
