First, select your ten fictional characters (from any medium) by whichever method you like best. Then answer the questions below.
1. Viccini (Princess Bride)
2. Al Bester (Babylon 5)
3. Albert Calavicci (Quantum Leap)
4. Shawn Spencer (Psych)
5. Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1)
6. Severus Snape (Harry Potter)
7. Anya (Buffy)
8. Kaylee Fry (Firefly)
9. Chloe Sullivan (Smallville)
10. Leia Organa Solo (Star Wars)
1. Divide the list up by even and odd. Which group of five would make a better Five Man Band (like a Power Rangers team)? Who would you slot in each position: Leader, Lancer (second-in-command), Big Guy, Smart Guy, The Chick? If you think the team would be improved by swapping one character between the even and odd groups, which ones would you switch?
Team Odd:
Viccini, Calavicci, Daniel Jackson, Anya, Chloe
Leader: Viccini, most likely. He doesn't seem the type to take orders well
Lancer: Calavicci. He's military. He can both give and take orders.
Smart Guy: Daniel Jackson. He's got how many doctorate degrees?
The Chick: Chloe?
Big Guy: Anya. She's a vengeance demon, you know.
Team Even:
Bester, Spencer, Snape, Kaylee, Leia
Leader: Leia, she was president, right? Surely she can handle a telepath, a wizard, and Shawn, too. Well, maybe not Shawn.
Lancer: Bester, assuming he actually agrees with Leia, he can force everyone else in line
Smart Guy: Spencer, I suppose, but he's going to need help from Bester and Snape on anything that isn't involved with perception, deduction, and photographic memory.
The Chick: Kaylee
Big Guy: Snape. He's got offensive magics and was a Death Eater. How much more intimidating can you get?
Let's swap out Spencer and Chloe. Chloe's quite brilliant in her own right, so she can be Even's smart guy. Spencer can be Odd's chick since he is quite good a flirting.
2. Gender-swap 2, 8 & 10. Which character would have the most change in their story arc? Which the least? Would any of these characters have to have a complete personality change to be believable as the opposite sex?
Bester: Gosh, a female Bester? She'd have to prove herself even more, so she'd probably be even more unpleasant. She's still a P12 raised by the Corps, so the arrogance and psi cop professions are a given.
Kaylee: He'd still be a mechanic. Probably not quite as sweet and Kaylie-like though. Also, most likely no crushing on Simon and how she got hired onto Serenity would pretty much have to change.
Leia: Hey, it's Luke! Really, how much she changes would have to depend on whether she was still sent to live with Bail Organa or not. And he'd probably have gone for his Jedi Training regardless. S/he'd probably have the most change.
3. Compare the matchups of 1 & 8 and 5 & 9. (Ignore canon sexual preferences for the moment.) Which couple would be more compatible? Which couple would be more plausible to people from either principal's home culture?
Viccini and Kaylee: Um, no. She's much too nice and too young for him.
Daniel Jackson and Chloe: Certainly more plausible than Viccini and Kaylee. Given how little Jackson leaves the base, though, I have no idea how they'd meet.
4. Your team is 3, 4 & 9. The mission consists of a social challenge, a mental challenge and a physical challenge. Which team member do you assign to each challenge?
Social challenge: Shawn Spencer
Mental challenge: Chloe Sullivan
Physical challenge: Albert Calavicci
Al's getting on in years, but he's still military. Chloe's bright. Shawn's good with motivations and people.
5. 7 becomes 1's boss for a week in some plausible fashion. How's their working relationship?
Anya is Viccini's boss? Oh, gosh. He's going to have warts and live in a world without shrimp within the first ten minutes.
6. 2 finds him/her/itself inserted into 6's continuity. As far as anyone other than 2 or 6 is concerned, they've always been there. What role would 2 be presumed to have had in 6's story, and could they fit in without going wonky?
Bester goes Potterverse? He's the new Defense Professor, of course. He can't do magic, but he's a P12. He can make everybody think he's doing magic. Or have them do magic for him, as needed. And that guy Voldemort? Just give Bester line of sight, and the irritation will get a personality wipe. Easy Peasy. He has no idea what all these wizards are so concerned about.
7. 3 and 5 get three wishes. The catch is that they have to agree on all three wishes before they get the benefits of any of them. What three wishes would they make?
Calavicci and Jackson. First thing, guaranteed budgets for the stargate and quantum leap programs and governmental non-involvement otherwise. Second thing, Sam comes home. Third thing, the Ori go away and don't ever come back.
8. 1 and 2 are brainwashed by a one-time artifact that works even on people immune to mind control to attack and kill 4. They keep their normal personality, skills and competence level, except any Code vs. Killing has been turned off. Can 4 survive? How?
Viccini and Bester are going after Shawn Spencer. That seems a little unfair somehow. Sorry, but I think Shawn's toast, unless they kill each other first. That's really his best best. But I think Bester will just kill Viccini (Viccini's overly elaborate plan and the constant use of the word 'inconceivable' really irritates him) and then take out Shawn.
9. 6, 7, 9 & 10 must help an orphanage full of small and depressed children have a merry Christmas. Who does what, knowing that at the very least the kids will be expecting a visit from Santa?
Snape, Anya, Chloe, and Leia. Um, Snape refuses outright and apparates away. Anya handles the money and buys all the presents (after some forceful urging to part with the cash). Leia hires a Santa Claus and otherwise provides the organization for what needs doing. Chloe researches online (and possibly hacks into the orphanage's files about the kids themselves) about what would cheer the kids up and informs the other two so they know what to buy and what to organize for entertainment.
10. 3 and 8 are challenged to circumnavigate the Earth in eighty days or less, using only forms of transportation invented before 1900. Can they do it, or will they be fatally distracted by sidequests or their own personality conflicts?
Calavicci and Kaylee. Well, Kaylee can get anything mechanical to work, and Calavicci can probably come up with a good plan, and both are pretty diplomatic so they shouldn't run into too many problems along the way as long as Al stays away from alcohol and married women, so sure. They can do it.
