I haven't done one of these posts in a while, but I have these two bands buzzing around my head right now and figured you might be as intrigued as I was.
First up: Army Navy. Rockers based somewhere on the West Coast. Their most famous members are merely famous by association: The drummer used to be the drummer in Elvis Costello's Attractions, and the lead singer used to share lead duties in a band called Pinwheel with Ben Gibbard (now in Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service, of course). First noticed through their contribution to the soundtrack to Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist, "Silvery Sleds." Contribute a track (alongside Bat for Lashes, Dandy Warhols, etc.) to Perfect for Cats, one of two Cure tribute albums out on the horizon. Their self-titled debut just got a 7-something from Pitchfork, and their Posies/db's feel is wonderfully evident on the songs on their
Myspace.
Next up: N.A.S.A. Stands for "North America/South America." N.A. = DJ/producer Squeak E. Clean a/k/a Sam Spiegel, brother of director Spike Jonze. S.A. = DJ Zegon a/k/a Brazilian professional skateboarder Ze Gonzales. (They play the Barbary in Philly on March 13.) Their debut The Spirit of Apollo drops in a few weeks, and if their musical pedigree doesn't quite light a fire under your feet, their list of guest performers will: Kool Keith, Lovefoxxx (CSS), Spank Rock and Amanda Blank, John Frusciante, Fatlip and Slim Kid Tre (The Pharcyde), E-40, Gift of Gab, Chali 2na, KRS-One, George Clinton, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, DJ Qbert, M.I.A., Kanye West, Santogold, Lykke Li, the Cool Kids, Scarface, Karen O and Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), about half of the Wu-Tang Clan (including the late ODB), and Tom Waits. Seriously, this is Gorillaz or Peeping Tom gone completely bonkers. Check out the video for the first leak "Money," featuring Seu Jorge, Z-Trip, Ras Congo, David Byrne, and Chuck D. atop the iconic imagery of Obey/Obama artist
