The memories assaulted David as soon as he walked into the house. He could see his family like ghosts moving around. Brenda sitting in a chair, smoking a cigarette and watching TV, Johnny and Teddy sitting on the couch, whispering something that could only mean trouble for David and Petey, Mary crawling after David while he and Petey did the chores. Suddenly he was that boy again. He could feel the fear, sadness, loneliness and pain that had defined his childhood.

Nick watched his lover closely as they moved through the living room. He could see the agony he was in. He glanced at Mary who was also watching her brother with tears in her eyes.

“It’s alright, David.” Nick said softly. “You’re not a kid anymore. She can’t hurt you.”

David was brought back to the present by the voice he loved so much. He nodded as they continued towards Brenda’s bedroom. David couldn’t stop the memories as they passed through the hallway. There was Mary’s room. He could see her curled up under her bed, shaking and crying. He remembered how as soon as she heard his voice she came out and ran to him. Sometimes he held her for hours till she was calm enough to sleep. As much as she adored Petey, David was the only one she would let comfort her.

Next they passed the bedroom he’d shared with Petey. He could see them sitting in the floor playing Monopoly and glancing at the door wondering how long it would be before one of his brothers would come and kick the board across the room.

David paused in front of his brothers’ room. He’d only been in their room once and not by choice. About a week after Petey died Teddy had brought a girl home. David suspected she was a hooker. They made him watch as they each had sex with her. Telling him they were going to teach him to like women.  He shuddered to think what they might have made him do if Brenda hadn’t come home then. She was livid when she saw the naked girl in their bedroom. She told them to get that whore out of her house and never bring another one in. David had never seen her yell at them before and at first he thought that she was mad because they were making him watch but it didn’t take long to figure out she was just jealous that there was another woman in the house.

David sighed and continued down the hall. He stopped in front of his mother’s bedroom door, took a deep breath and followed Mary into the room.  Nick stood just inside the door although he wanted to be by David’s side.

“Brenda.” Mary said. “Davey’s here.”

David stared at the fragile old woman. Could this really be the same woman that made his life hell?

Brenda slowly opened her eyes. “Davey?”

“It’s me. Mary said you wanted to see me.”

She looked at him. “You look like your father.”

“I don’t have much time so could you tell me what you want?”

“I saw him last week.”

“Who?” David asked.

“Your father.”

“Brenda, Daddy’s been died for years.” Mary frowned.

“I know that!  she snapped.

David automatically moved in front of Mary. “Don’t yell at her. Just tell me what the hell you want.”

“I guess you finally grew a backbone.” Brenda sneered. “I wonder how brave you’d be if your brothers were here.”

“That’s it. We’re leaving.” David turned and started out.

“Wait. It’s about Petey.”

“What about him?” David glared.

“Your father said I couldn’t rest until Petey did.”

David gaped at her. She had to be kidding. Did she think she was going to heaven after everything she did?

“You have to find him and give him a proper resting place.” Brenda insisted.

“Find him?” David felt nauseous.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We took him to Vegas.”

“Las Vegas?” David looked at Mary and whispered “Did you tell her I live in Vegas?”

“No, of course not.”

“Why Vegas?” David asked.

“Johnny thought we should take him out of state. He said the desert would be a good place to bury him.”

“Let me get this straight. You went to Vegas and buried Petey in the desert.”

“Right.”

“And I’m supposed to find him? How? The desert is huge.”

Brenda grabbed his arm with more force than she looked capable of. “You will do as I say, David.”

There she was, the woman that terrorized him, same tone of voice, same cold eyes.

David froze for a second then jerked his arm away. “You can’t tell me what to do anymore, old woman.”

David walked out of the room and into Nick’s arms. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Mary giving Brenda her medicine. He couldn’t stop shaking. Despite what he had said he knew he would try to find Petey. It was probably impossible but he had to do it. He owed Petey that much. He thought after seeing Brenda it would be over but now he knew it was just beginning.

They had just finished helping Mary pack when they heard a car coming down the road.

“Shit.” Mary ran to the window.  “It’s Johnny and Teddy.”
