Lovely Complex is a pretty fun show. The one thing that I find a little hard to swallow is friends becoming romantic. In some ways it makes so much sense, because obviously both parties are so compatible, or they wouldn't be friends in the first place...
But who makes the first move? Do you even bother making a first move because you could totally mess up the friendship? I'm kinda curious if the manga-ka (hmm it IS a woman, Nakahara Aya) actually went through this cause this seems more like the guy's perspective than a woman's. I've been so indoctrinated into the "girls file guys as friends or potential lovers in the first 5 minutes" bit for so long I guess I never thought anything else was possible...oh well, I guess that still applies even if you go with that "When Harry Met Sally" thing and say that it's always in the back of a guy's mind...which is true in a way, I guess...but still , I think its more of a constant curiosity than something that actually motivates your behavior. Otherwise, by that logic I would never hang out with girls that I didn't think there was some chance of being with...
Or...is this some cultural thing? Maybe Japanese girls think differently? I mean I guess its possible, but something like this seems more based on biology than culture...plus, from a popular culture point of view...shoujo manga seems to reinforce the whole "oh he's a lifelong friend I'm going to go after the other guy" kind of mindset.
In some ways I guess part of my attraction to this show stems from the fact that there have been so few anime based on plain relationships recently. The height difference is nothing compared to all of the twincest, lolita/shouta, spirit/mortal and other odd pairings that seem to be the norm nowadays. Hmm, this might come off as bashing shoujo ai or shonen ai, but that isn't what I'm getting at. I'm glad those kinds of stories are getting made, but I do kind of wish there would be some old-school drama...just exploring some characters and their relationships.
