1) Something Old: A blurb from one of the first fics you ever wrote.
I have a hard time
saying what my first fic was, but I'm going to go with
Strange Aeons.
“I don’t get it,” Cassandra says. “This is just random bits of Latverian history we’re mucking about with now. What’s the point?”
“The point is me,” Victor says.
“Not everything is about you,” Cassandra says. Valeria is hacking into the UN system to undo the damage Kang has done. Leah and Loki are somewhere, doing something. Victor needs to get better at keeping track of them. This is harrowing enough at it is, without the prospect of going back and doing it all over again to fix Loki’s mistakes.
“You’re right,” Victor says, “this is about you. Kang wants you to live.”
“How does changing Latverian history do that? I’m not Latverian,” belatedly, she adds, “or dead.”
“I am,” Victor says, “Latverian, not dead. In the timeline we’re reestablishing, I killed you.”
“Oh,” Cassandra says.
2) Something New: A snippet from something you're currently working on, or from the last thing you posted.
"Nice view from up here." The woman who sits down next to him is Greek and has Athene-sharp grey eyes. "Not as blinding as it used to be."
"It's always been like this," Scipio says.
"No. It used to be different before --"
"Before Rome. I know." Scipio makes a conscious effort to unclench his teeth.
She laughs. "You Romans. You always think everything is about you. I was going to say 'before the robbers came'. That didn't take long, if you were wondering."
3) Something Borrowed: A scene or section of dialogue from another writer's story. Maybe something that inspired you or resonated with you. (Credit the writer and link to it if possible, please.)
sineala is the only other person to have written Hannibal/Scipio in
Terrible Claws. It even has dinosaurs.
Hannibal tilted his head in what Scipio supposed was acknowledgment. "You are the only other man I have seen here. You are Rome's greatest general. Your death would be a waste."
"So you will kill me as soon as we meet other men?"
The smile Hannibal gave him was all bared teeth, like the stalking smile of the bird-beast, and his hand was on his sword-hilt. "Or I might have grown fond of you by then. I know not what fate holds."
Scipio frowned. "I was told you swore never to be a friend to Rome."
"I might be a friend to a Roman." The smile now was kinder. "There are differences."
4) Something Blue: C'mon, you know you've written a really gut-wrenching bit of angst at some point. Let's hear the saddest or angstiest thing you've got. Alternatively? Tell us about the last time you described the color blue.
I think the entirety of
Retrograde qualifies as angst to some extent, but particularly this bit.
Layla takes off her gauntlet.
She sets it down on the wave genrator while Valeria stares at her in shock. She's never seen Layla without it. Needle marks and bruises pepper the inside of her arm. Valeria's felt this same kind of shock exactly twice in her life.
Layla's quiet 'I quit' barely registers.
Valeria watches her go, deathly fingers wrapped around her heart. When the door closes behind her, Valeria is still staring. In that moment, she knows she will never see Layla again.
At least... at least Uncle Doom won't leave. She made sure of that.
"I am only the monster you made me," she says. She doesn't know who she's talking to.
