Captain America: Ship War

Apr 30, 2016 23:08

Guess what movie I saw? Yup, it was Captain America: Civil War.

I greatly enjoyed it but WOW IT WAS INTENSE.

I saw it with a group of friends and on either side of me were a Steve/Bucky shipper and a Steve/Tony shipper, which was an interesting experience. They each walked out of the cinema with a new appreciation for each other's ship. I walked out SHIPPING ALL THE THINGS as I pretty much always do.

There is literally no ship in this movie I would be down with. Like, you know how the poster that has the team lined up on both sides starts with line-ups that make sense as ships (Steve/Tony, Nat/Sam) and get progressively more nonsensical (Wanda/Rhodey, Vision/Bucky, Clint/T'Challa)? I would read fic for every single one of those.

If there are any questions about spoilers or things you want to know or whatever, feel free to ask.

I saw the movie in 2D with French subtitles. I was also pretty much unspoiled going in.

WANDA! I loved her so much in this movie even though sometimes I was wondering where she was and why she hadn't been onscreen for a while. For example, in the very first fight scene, she's nowhere to be seen between when she disperses the gas and when she handles the bomb, which is weird.

I greatly enjoyed her interactions with Steve -- in particular, I loved that the theme Age of Ultron started of Steve seeing himself in Wanda and acting as her mentor was continued here. He's protective of her, I love it. I also loved her interactions with Nat and Sam. Clint too. Not so much with Vision, except when she was bringing him down.

I feel like the lack of interaction between her and Tony was a mistake, as revenge for the murder of one's parents is a Major Thing in this movie.

(Wanda was voted Avenger We Would Most Like To Hang Out With by the friend group I saw the movie with.)

I am the designated Science Person of this friend group, which means I was the only one who went >:[ at Sam using X-rays without a receptor, but I was also the only one who figured out that Zemo was building an EMP generator when I saw that giant coil. SO THERE.

Speaking of Zemo, I like that his plan is so far the most successful of all the MCU villain plans and that it was very well pulled off plan. I mean, "cool motive, still murder" but points for execution.

Nat was also great in this movie! I really enjoyed her interactions with T'Challa, from their kind of flirty original conversation to her offering him comfort to her recruiting him to "I said I'd help you find him, not capture him". Rules lawyer Nat is the best Nat. I also enjoyed her with Sam and I think she had a nice moment with Rhodey too.Her and Clint were pretty hilarious ("We're still friends, right?") as were her and Bucky ("You could at least remember me!").

I have no real feelings about Sharon except that a) Her fight with Bucky was hot and b) the romance felt shoe-horned in. (It is not a Sharon/Bucky romance, more's the pity, that would at least have been unexpected and interesting.)

I was suprisingly vindicated by the canon confirmation that Bucky does have a simple on/off Winter Soldier switch inside his head as it's kind of a plot point in Hypothesis in scarlet (3765 words, MCU, gen, Age of Ultron canon-divergent AU, Wanda + Bucky). Also vindicated that Howard recognised the Winter Soldier as Bucky right before Bucky killed him MAXIMUM TRAGEDY YAY.

Also, Bucky switch from referring to Steve as "vous" to referring to him as "tu" hit me in the feelings. And I am really hoping Bucky shows up in Black Panther. I am SO THERE for more Bucky and T'Challa fun times.

T'Challa's personal arc was GREAT. I love how he went from "I will murder this dude and use diplomatic immunity to get away with it" to refusing to let his revenge consume him and putting justice over vengeance. And his "I don't care" was hilarious.

I greatly enjoyed the Sam and Rhodey relationship -- how Sam turns back when Rhodey gets hurt, oh my heart. (RHODEY HAD BETTER BE OKAY) Sam making a dig at T'Challa with "so you like cats?" was pretty funny. My favourite of Sam's relationships was the Sam & Bucky Comedy Duo, however, because that shit was HILARIOUS.

I was really glad to see Rhodey -- because as far as I'm concerned WARMACHINEROX -- but D: I was not expecting that and I genuinely afraid they'd killed Rhodey, but thankfully no. I also thought it was interesting that the movie implied he felt guilty for not being in New York when the Chitauri attacked.

Everyone had some great comedy moments, actually.

No lie, as soon as we saw the Raft I started plotting a prison break, but canon got there first.

I was pretty meh on Spider-Man. The scene of Tony recruiting him went on too long and while had some fun moments, I would rather most of his screen time had been given to Nat or Wanda.

Scott, on the other hand, was hilarious and underserved. "This is your conscience! I know we haven't been speaking a lot lately..."

I legit did not know Clint was gonna be in this move! Even though he's on the posters! Possibly I am an idiot, but seeing him show up was an nice surprise.

I am team THESE ACCORDS WERE BADLY PLANNED.

Yeah, that's about it. I ENJOYED IT A LOT. I kind of want to write fic, but I'm not sure what kind of fic yet.
