GO ME (the "I done a stupid" remix)
I DID IT! I told myself I'd finish and post this story before Captain America Civil War came out, and I did.

Summary: Don't bring a formerly brainwashed assassin to a mutant fight.
Way back before Age of Ultron came out, there were many stories working on the premise that the Winter Soldier would be found before that movie. This is a take on what the events of that movie might have gone, had this been true.
It is also definite proof I cannot do shippy, because I was originally going to write it for a Steve/Bucky friend who was -- when I started writing it, lo these many months ago -- getting shit for her ship. Lo and behold, it's in Wanda's PoV and Steve and Bucky do not even talk to each other.
I had the original idea right after I saw the movie, because I was thinking of Experiment in red the other Wanda + Winter Soldier fic I wrote (that one after Captain America Winter Soldier came out). Guess this means that after writing fic when only one of them had canon characterisation, then fic where they both did but had no met, I should write fic after they have met in canon. (PLEASE MEET IN CANON)
Honestly, having decided to write a Steve/Bucky fic, I tried to find a plot, that was what I settled on. Having found a plot, I of course decided to set up camp in the head of whoever was most interesting (for me) to see the story through their eyes, here this was Wanda -- and that is how I go from shippy to plot and only realise 2k into a story that it is not shippy at all and I am an idiot.
(I just cannot do shippy, I need to accept that. I can't structure stories on emotional arcs alone. Funnily enough, Experiment in red is probably the one fic of mine that comes closest to this, but even there it's got other stuff going on, you just don't see it that much.)
In fairness to Steve and Bucky not talking to each other, Bucky talks to exactly one person in this fic via direct speech, for thematic reasons.
Beta by the amazing chiiyo86 who I really need to stop asking for beta the day before deadlines -- but for that I wold need to finish writing fics before deadlines and look I done a stupid staying up late last night finishing it because I did not think this through.
Anyway, I wrote fic, yay.
