BIg important election...

I really respect John McCain. I respect his service. I respect his willingness to stand up to his own party when something he really cared about came up. And I understand that he was STOMPED on by the Bush campaign in 2000. I admit that the man has some serious issues, but he's a politician.

I am not at all sad to see Sarah Palin given the boot. I think she could be the best thing to happen to American politics since the invention of the political party; the GOP's whole hearted embrace of this loon as a symbol of hope and leadership really should rip the damned party in pieces. This was evidenced by the HUGE number of republicans who jumped ship and endorsed President-elect Obama.

Obama is a figure of hope. We need him now to be an instrument of change and growth. He's got a lot of ground to make up for; things are bad and on a downhill slide. He does have a congress full of should-be accomplices, so he doesn't have a lot of room to make excuses.

Do I think this will solve everything? Hells, no. He needs to win over a lot of angry, bitter close-minded pricks and he's got a bit of convincing to do for those of us who supported him as the slightly better option or simply out of fear that John's heart would give out in less than 4 years.

But, compared to the last two elections, which left me uninspired and pissed respectively, at least this time I have a cautious optimism. Things really ought to at least get better, even if some of the promises were over-the-top.
