Um, my question is, what is this? :D; I can't seem to find a description of what exactly you guys are doing here. I get that it's some kind of writing contest or challenge? But more specific information would be good.
That is a wonderful question! And it was my error in assuming everyone knew what I big bang was ^^; My apologies!
A big bang (modeled after the big bangs in other fandoms such as Supernatural, Harry Potter, Reborn) is a writing challenge in which writers write novella-length stories, which is then illustrated (typically with just one piece of art, but this depends on how inspired the artist is) by participating artists. It's a long process because of how long the fics have to be (in this case, twenty thousand words), but it's well worth it in the end when we've got a handful of new, long DGM fics for the fandom to enjoy! :3
I have a partial draft of something I started last year, parts of which were put up at the 31_days community early last year. Could I rewrite/continue it for this challenge? It would need to have a heavy rewrite due to some things that happened in canon after I started playing with the story. I could flock the comm entries if need be.
I'm sorry, but we ask that you please write new material for this challenge, especially if parts have been posted previously to a different community. However, if the idea/storyline/theme was something you really liked, then by all means, work with that. Just please make it a new fic, instead of a rewrite of an old one. That keeps all the participants on equal footing.
Cool 8D finally something to drag people back to the fandom with the absence of the manga (and the anime).
My question is, after we finish the draft, where do we submit it? Do we send it to the contact you provide us, or will there be another submission form?
When the deadline for rough drafts get closer (possibly a month or so beforehand), I will post submission instructions--format, headings, and where to submit it to, which will be the contact listed above: dgmbigbang@gmail.com
:3 I will be sending out weekly reminders to make sure no one forgets in the long months to come! XD
This isn't actually a competition of any sort so no, there are no prizes. However, all participating writers will hopefully receive one or more fanart from the participating artists :D
Okay, okay, this sounds super fun and I'd love to join, but I'm also super hesitant. For some quick questions, are there any requirements for writers? What I'm wondering is the quality level, how high? Also, how soon do you need to sign up? Are there any beta offernings as well or is that something the writer should look into on their own? But anyways, I'm looking forward to this!
1. There is no quality level requirement. Anyone who wants to participate can participate :D All we ask is that you check and double check for grammar and spelling and all submissions must be beta'd.
2. Writer sign-ups end July 1, 2009 - 11 p.m. (Central). Artist sign-ups go through December 1, 2009 (so more artists can continue to sign up as writers are working on their fics).
3. We will be making a post asking for potential betas for the fics (although we haven't decided when yet). However, there's no telling how many people, if any, will come forward to help out so I'd advise that you also try and find a beta on your own.
Thank you for the questions! Hope to see you in the challenge!

I hope you get some takers, to be honest I'll be surprised if there are many people willing to write 20k+ words in D.Gray-man. @_@;

<3 It's a huge word count but the writers are given from July to December to work on it, so I think it'll be manageable :3
