AntiCasinos and Datelets

It's the middle of the night: 2:30 am. Guess I'm up for a little bit.

So I've been coaching my newest placement who is working as a greeter at Walmart. Yes, Walmart. I know. But I've been kinda blocking out a few things there - the whole Walmart effect, China, union busting, health insurance. Yes, there's that, but what's really been toughest about it is just being in the place for hours at a time. Walmart is an incredibly busy place, and I don't think you get the scope of it until you've manned the doors for a few hours, any few hours, and seen the scads of people that come in and the scads of stuff that goes out with them. The noise, the fluorescent lights, the WHITE - it's kinda like an Apple Store on steroids, or a negative image of a casino.

So yeah, I was telling my Dad that we all need to choose our battles as far as social justice goes. They hire people with disabilities. Quite a lot of them. And yes, that probably has a lot to do with good PR, and it most certainly has to do with having enough money moving through the place to afford to take perceived risks in hiring, but a job is a job, and for people with disabilities, a job is much more than just a paycheck. So me and Walmart are okay enough - we've agreed to disagree on some things, but they did give the guy a chance.

So far, so good, by the way. He's good at it. It's his job to lose. Hopefully he'll man up and stick it out for a year.

Meanwhile I'm shot. I was SO tired after work I couldn't go to the gym. My feet were ringing and my head was just fried. I can do that Friday night. No point risking getting sick, as I'm getting plenty of exertion just being in that circus for nine hours at a time.

So it appears I'll have a little date with The Chef this Sunday. A little date because she's going to the Colts game. That's fine by me, and really I find it highly unusual and charming that I seem to really be into a football fan. THAT'S new! Some of that is just Indianapolis, I think - I've never seen a place so gung-ho about football. And as far as she goes? The girl is very smart and quick on her toes, so it's not like she's a robot about it.

So that's all well and good. I'm looking forward to it, but with three more Walmart shifts to go before that point, Sunday is looking mighty far away. Still though, it's a nice thing to have to dust off and look at once the going gets tough. I forgot how difficult parts of my job can be! Ah, well - I'm good at it, so I may as well do my best to work my magic.
