I hope that this story continues to write itself in the way it has thus far. I currently have about 3 "chapters", but I'm going to try to keep a buffer of a few chapters between what I'm offering up to you all and where I'm at, writing. This story has not been beta'd, so if there are any errors they are all mine. However, I'm a stickler for grammer and punctuation perfection (but only when it comes to my own writing), so I'm hoping there aren't any errors. If there are any you see, please alert me and I will do what I can to fix them.
Also, I'd like it known that this is my own take on the fuzziness that is the age-difference. And that there are two ideas in here that I cannot fully claim, but read them in "When She Says She Loves Me" by Fairly Odd New Yorker on FFNet. These two ideas are the light and the childish-seeming promise (I'll clarify them when I actually get to them). (I also am not making monies on this, standard fan-works disclaimers apply.)
So, now that I've given you lots of pre-info, let's begin the story, shall we?
Title: Light in the Darkness {1/?}
Author: Mortegami
Genre: Fluff/Romance/Adventure/Sap, possibly some angst later on...
Rating: G, for this "chapter". Potential for a lot higher in future parts.
Summary: Someone is making his parents very proud. Very proud, indeed.
“Love, did you see the message that was sent to us? I think you need to sit down before you read it,” came the soft voice from in the kitchen. The youth knew he shouldn’t be stealing down here this late at night; shouldn’t be eavesdropping on his parents. But there was no other way for him to satisfy his insatiable curiosity. The rustle of parchment being unfolded drew his attention again. The silence that followed was brief and only punctuated by dual sharp intakes of breath.
“By the Suns!” he heard his father say softly. “I knew we had reason to be proud of our son, but this brings us too much!”
“Do you think we should allow this, Edvard? He’s only 11 and only just graduated.” The concern in his mother’s voice was a counterpoint to the pride in his father’s.
“Of course we should allow this, Nomiki! Boy’s been offered the chance of a lifetime! He’s already made us proud by making it through school this swiftly, we would be terrible parents, indeed, if we didn’t allow him to take this opportunity if he wants it.” The youth could not withstand his curiosity any more. Taking a deep breath, he stepped into the doorway into the kitchen. His mother put her hands on her hips, sighing softly even as his father chuckled and waved him into the room. “I didn’t think it would take you long to want to know what was going on, Son. Come in and have a seat by the fire here with me. Your mother will get you something to drink and we can discuss this.”
The youth did as bid without a word, accepting the warm cup of cocoa his mother handed him. He watched his parents with wide, curious eyes, waiting to be told what was transpiring in his life. As he took a sip of the warm brew, his father handed him the parchment.
“Take a look at that, Son. Read it through carefully, weigh your options, and then decide. Don’t rush to your decision, either. Not that I expect you would, but take as long as you need to decide,” his father said. Setting the cup down, he picked up the parchment and read it through.
My Gentle Lord and Lady,
I wish to congratulate you on having such a highly intelligent young man to call ‘Son’. To graduate at such a young age speaks highly of both his interest in learning and the care and support of his parents.
But I have a request of both you and your son. I am looking for someone who would be willing to help me keep an eye upon the O.Z. He would have to be willing and ready to tell me what is going on exactly as it actually is, without fail. I feel as though your son is exactly the type of person I am looking for.
Though your son is extremely young for such a position, I would be more than happy to have him taught the ways of the Royal Court, as well as what he would need to watch out for. I do understand that he has a keen and active mind that is continually creating things, and to this end will gladly offer him a laboratory in which to work, as well as room and board.
I do apologize for being unable to give you more information, but this is not the normal way in which I relay things. I usually prefer to make a personal visit, but with my hands full with my children, I fear that is not possible this time. Please forgive me.
Your loving Queen.
The youth read through the missive two more times before setting it upon the table beside his cup and propping his chin in his hand, visibly deep in thought. He spoke some of his thoughts out loud to get the opinion of his parents.
“I’m too young for such a position,” he said softly, staring off at the wall.
“You’ll probably go through a few annuals of training. You’ll probably actually take the full responsibility of the position once you hit the age you can be hired on,” his father responded, just as softly, recognizing the sharp mind of his son working swiftly.
“Not to mention you’ll probably have a few more annuals of learning higher forms of the subjects you love most,” his mother added. The youth nodded absently, mentally noting his mother’s words. In a few more moments’ time, his gaze cleared and his parents waited for his decision.
“I’ll do it.”
