Title: Family Portrait

Show: Merlin

Characters/Pairings: Gwen/Arthur, Baby Pendragon

Rating: G

Word Count: 539

Disclaimer: I obviously don’t own, because if I did… I would somehow write an episode that requires Arthur to hold a baby (however briefly) just to satisfy my need to see it.

Summary: Arthur and Gwen are newly parents.

A/N: I paraphrase kepp0xy ’s sentiments when I say that Daddy!Arthur makes my ovaries explode.

Yes, Baby Pendragon is nameless. I couldn’t decide whether to name it one of the names from the early legends, when Guinevere was still “Gwenhwyfar” (but then should I try to somehow ‘modernize’ the name?) or if I should try to make up a new name…. so Yay for ambiguity!

The cry of a babe fractured through Gwen’s slumber and she couldn’t help but groan.

But before she could struggle to get up, she felt a warm hand pat on her back.

“I’ll get him this time, love,” Arthur mumbled.

She nodded, still half asleep and fully grateful.

Of course, as king and queen, they could have the baby in another room with his own nursemaid. But Gwen wanted to raise the child on their own, with only the occasional help from a servant. And given Arthur’s personal childhood, he agreed that it would probably be best.

Some time later, Gwen stirred awake again, probably from the strange absence of Arthur next to her. She had no idea how much time had passed.

So she got up, slipping her dressing gown over her nightdress, and peered into the adjacent room. But Arthur was nowhere to be found.

She opened the door of the royal chambers to ask the guards.

“Do you happen to know where the king went?”

“He mentioned getting some fresh air, your majesty.”

Gwen thanked them and made her way up to their usual spot on the rampart.

And just as she had guessed, Arthur was there. His silhouette was barely visible with the early morning sunlight just beginning to show over the horizon, the outline of a small body resting against his chest.

“What are you doing out here?” she asked blearily.

Arthur turned and pressed a finger to his lips and gestured toward the sleeping babe in his arms.

“Showing our son his kingdom,” he whispered with a smile. “Apparently, he was not very impressed. Dozed right off in the middle of my exposition of the lands.”

She returned his smile. “It was the sound of your voice. It soothed him.”

Gwen watched as Arthur smoothed his thumb over their son’s head and kissed it gently. He always chose to disagree with her, but she thought Arthur was a natural father. His affections were free and without thought and he looked surprisingly at ease whenever he held their child.

“What are you smiling at?” he whispered.

Gwen shook her head, not realizing that she had been grinning uncontrollably. “Nothing,” she lied. He would probably laugh and tell her he looked ridiculous and he had no idea what he was doing. If there was one thing that Arthur was humble about, it was being a good father.

Soon the baby began to fuss, causing Gwen to instinctively hold out her arms for him. Arthur carefully transferred him to her, Gwen resting his head on her shoulder and rubbing his back until he was lulled back to sleep.

This time it was Arthur who smiled at her, admiring how she looked with their son. He stepped behind her, wrapping them both in his arms.

“I love you,” he whispered and pressed a kiss into her hair. “I love you both more than anything.”

She sank deeper into her husband’s embrace and kissed her son’s head the way Arthur had done. It was so peaceful, watching the sun start to peek up and spread its soft and gentle light over Camelot and her family. A perfect moment with the two men she loved most in the world.
