Yesterday, I was knitting while sitting on the steps of an office building for the Art Institute and the School of the Art Institute when a man with a remarkable number of facial piercings came down the stairs, stopped dead in his tracks and stood over me for a long time. Then he finally said something:
"Are you knitting with paper clips?"
"No, they're stitch markers. They let me know when I should be starting another lace repeat."
"You know you can buy a punchcard for a knitting machine, right?...I hate handwork. Machines good, people bad." And with that, he walked out the door.
