Yesterday The family and I trotted up to Lawrence. I've been a WW11 junkie all my life. Watching reruns of an old 60's television show initiated my interest in the B-17 flying fortresses, the bombers mostly used in Europe. I remember going to air shows when I was little, and a real B-17 was always promised to show up, (there are less than 15 left in the world, and most are not in flying condition). Only once did the plane actually show. This time, 20 mins flights were being given. Imagine flying in a real piece of history. It was too good to pass up.
It was fabulous. I never really realized how cramped it was inside of such a plane. It was so noisy but my ears didn't begin to hurt until the end of the flight. Passengers were allowed in the cockpit, nose, radio compartment, and waist, but not in the belly turret or tail. I took lots of pics. The view from the plane was spectacular. I imagined being a crewmember during the war. To be fair, I would not have made a good aviator, because 5 minutes before we landedd, I began to feel sick to my stomach. I can't imagine I would have faired well on a 10-12 hour flight over Germany.
But it was a thrilling experience!
