Singing Sisters present Joy!

There's nothing quite like nuns breaking out showtunes.

The Singing Sisters of Mount St. Mary College dish up a number of showstopping hits: "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Seventy-Six Trombones," "You'll Never Walk Alone" (which has also been covered by Nina Simone, by the way), and perhaps best of all, "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" While songs from the Gypsy soundtrack are sadly absent, I think they've got a fine collection.

Happy nuns are the best nuns of all. And what's happier than showtunes!

The Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de Ricci, on the other hand, got to write their own songs:

Possibly the most exciting song here is "The Retreat Song," an open invitation to modern women in need of an escape from the hassles of everyday life. The Sisters write in the liner notes, "Know what you need? Another car, another hairdo, an evening out? No indeed. You need a retreat!"

Or how about "And His Name Was John," a sassy number about Pope John XXIII? But wait, there's more: "This Is a Wise Virgin," the Sisters' song celebrating their holy Union as the Brides of Christ, is set to the traditional wedding march!

An estate sale last weekend turned up the hit album by the famous Dominican singing nun, Soeur Sourire. Did you know that the Singing Nun's "Dominique" was #1 on the US charts in December 1963? Yeah. The Kingsmen's "Louie Louie," at #2, never stood a chance.
