SOAP (part ii)

Jan 31, 2005 15:10

Notice how, on a soap, the ground-breaking twists always occur on a Friday, to keep viewers in supense over the weekend?

Same thing here, the big events happen on Fridays.

At the end of last week, my secret-identity was exposed.

Photos attached to the name John Kerr, rather than the name Dexter Collins appeared in the newspaper. These pictures ( Read more... )

Firstly:
"Anyway, um, cognitively challanged and cognitive difficulties? Cognitive is to do with learning, people who are mentally retarded, yes that term is actually acceptable, and politically correct, don't necessarily have learning problems. They can be incredibly smart or of average intelligence, whatever, and still have something wrong mentally, ie, I have recently met an obsessive compulsive who is the smartest person I know and still has therapy and stuff to overcome their mental difficulty.

The term retarded is offensive when applied to people with physical disabilities, people are over the top with political correctness these days and changing things that shouldn't be changed.

I've never heard anyone use the term cognitively challenged, it's actully probably more offensive then mentally retarded as it implies that only people who have learning difficulties are disadvantged, and people with OCD, bi-polar, Multiple personality disorder, and so on ar just wasting time.

Mentally retarded and Mentally disabled are both politically correct terms when applied to people who have mental disadvantages, people don't realise that anymore because the word retard is used so often as an insult.

This is a touchy subject for me and I also take it seriously that's why I know a lot about it. I know many people who have something wrong mentally, whether a touch like my cousin with Schizophrenia or fully blown like my Uncle with Homocystinuria (it's rare, not many people know of it), also having been in and out of hospitals with Daniel I know about many mental and physical disbilities.

Anyway, the point of this is that using terms like cognitively challenged is more offensive and more polticall uncorrect than correct terms like mentally retarded, so who ever you cut might not deserve it."

I just put this in a 'friends' journal, what do you think?

I agree with Fred_Smith. Names are just names, they aren't what makes you.
If people are having difficulty understanding you and your name stuff, or are cut that they didn't know it all, then they need to get over it. I like you for who you are, Ithink you're the coolest person I've met ovr this year and last year. I was confused about your name aswell as sometimes things didn't fit in my own head, but I didn't let that affect what I think of you.

I think that using Dex's name is a great idea. It shows how much you care/d for him and it makes him seem even more special. Like, now he's special to me because of how important heis/was to you. Does that make sense?

You don't have to explain yourself or your actions though. It's enough that you do them, if you didn't you wouldn't be right or you.

You're a very awesome and special guy. *hugs* to you. I think that using Dex's name is so so special and nice I can't find the right words to express it.

Hey Hoops!

I think you're the coolest person I've met ovr this year and last year.

That - that made my day. My week. My month.

You're a very awesome and special guy. *hugs* to you. I think that using Dex's name is so special and nice I can't find the right words to express itLike, now he's special to me because of how important he is/was to you. Does that make sense

Yes, it does make sense. *hugs*

Listen, if you're around UC in O-week, drop me a line and I'll sneak us into the staff club for coffee. :)

We can make a tableau! LOL

I just put this in a 'friends' journal, what do you think?

I think what you wrote was passionate and well informed. But, what's the story? Somebody was too PC and cut an LJ friend over the word "retard"?

I had a look on your friends site; you have LOTS. And I do mean lots - all twenty posts on the first page were dated today! - so that you read and comment on mine means much to me.

Much love
x

PS: Please don't call me smart :) I'm trying to find out more about who I am by avoiding the obvious descriptors.

I don't think I'll be around much in O-week, I have lack of money, but if there's a chance of meeting you I might come in one day. When will you be in?
The story behing the use of the word retarde was yeah, 'Somebody was too PC and cut an LJ friend over the word "retard", but then went on about how she was in the right, it bugged me :).
I like your posts. They're interesting. I scan a lot of my friends posts because a lot of them are the same, especially the ones who post several times a day. There are a few friends only friends I have too who post heaps, but again, it's nearly always the same.
I shan't call you smart. I'll think up some other words to list :)

I'm supposed to be in most days, but I'm not. I'm also straddling the campus at ANU. Possibly next week? I have an audition on Saturday.

Oh, and as for 'retard'? I prefer to be refered to as 'deranged'. Or 'maniacal'.

:)

That's why I need to get my Doctorate; nobody takes manaical [sp.] rants seriously unless you're a Doctor.

Like Doctor Evil.

Or Dr No.

Next week fits me better. (If by next week you mean the week after O-week). Maniacal :) You're so cool!
Dr. No is cooler than Dr. Evil. Actually, I don't know that for certain but I assume. I think it's a cooler name.
How long until you get you Doctorate?
