Ticket to Ride

For a while I have been toying with a different strategy for Ticket to Ride: totally ignoring contracts while trying to garner as many long routes as possible. There are some pretty big disincentives to trying this. Your strategy might work if you actually completed most or all of your starting tickets in the process. It would put you on about the same footing as everyone else, quickly, before they had time to complete their second round of tickets. They would then take a point hit before while you reaped the primary benefit of your strategy (lots of points from long routes). The only problem is if any of their second set of tickets were trivially completable, which seems to happen more often than not.
