Serenade you and smoke a black...

...just doesn't have the same ring to it. I think in the second verse I stole rhymes from both Dave Pirner and myself. Oh well.

Maybe I'm a bit of an enigma
Two parts pride and one part stigma
Maybe you're a bit of vindication
Two parts heart, one part elation
I've seen so many things I wish these old eyes would forget
I'm much too young to be so jaded
But far too jaded to regret
All of the places I have been
I'd wind up back there anyway
As for the things that I have seen I just don't have the words to say

And I don't know how you found a beating heart
But you've always seen through my facades right from the start
And I must thank you for looking through my despair
And showing me the dreams are still there

I've been so tired lately
Everything I was sure of somehow has escaped me
Baby you're a bit of insulation
Protection from the storm outside, A reminder to have patience
I've been moving these withered limbs at twice the speed of life
I'd have continued cutting corners
If I could just have found a knife
Measuring time high noon to midnight
But no time to just think twice

And I don't know how you found a beating heart
But you've always seen through my facades right from the start
And I must thank you for looking through my despair
And showing me the dreams are still there

All my instigations and allegations have reared their ugly heads
Yet you have seen me through
And somehow you still light where I may tread
So I am not afraid, though I must say
I'm not alright just yet

And I don't know how you found a beating heart
But you've always seen through my facades right from the start
And I must thank you for looking through my despair
And showing me the dreams are still there
