I spend way too much of my time paying attention to screencaps of these two, apparently, because themes & patterns just keep arising! And, well, what place to share these ingenious observations if not here? And so, a big random picspam, with bonus discussion questions! Spoilers for 2x11 lurk within!
(Thank you so much to
oltha_heri for the caps from "Getting Closer"!)
i. Making Elevators Awesome
Seriously. Elevators. They rock them. How is this even a thing that's possible?
ii. Matchy Body Language Galore
I love how they both have their own little default stances. Arms crossed! Hands on hips! But then occasionally, they escalate to matching poses and/or expressions.
iii. THE POWERWALKING
Well, this is just sacred stuff by now. SIGH! Also: I will never get over the fact that, in that last cap, they're all, 'Teehee, torturing people for information!' Oh, you weirdo freaks, you belong together.
iv. In A Post-'You Betrayed Me' World, Pair Newfound Animosity & Loathing With ... Lots Of Unnecessary Physical Proximity?
I don't know, guys, I just can't shake the suspicion that they are somehow torturing each other with sexiness.
Also, random discussion in addition to all the pretty, just because I've been pondering this for awhile! What moments do you guys think really suggest that this pairing is canonically intended within the realm of the show? Sometimes, I kinda get all, 'Wow, I just got all giddy over how two people walked next to each other while talking about work,' and then am inclined to stop and ponder. Like, in no way am I at all hating on the chemistry, because it kind of LIGHTS UP MY WHOLE LIFE WITH ITS UNDENIABILITY; I'm just curious for the sake of discussion, and sometimes I wonder whether, if asked about D/D, Joss or the writers or Olivia or Reed would be all, 'OH YEAH, THAT WAS TOTALLY ON PURPOSE' or more like, 'Um ... what?'
Stuff that strikes me as being indicative as some sort of canonical romantic interest, sans my bias to see shippiness in everything about them ever, in a just-off-the-top-of-my-head and random listing:
+ Adelle sobbing after finding out about Dominic in "A Spy in the House of Love." Paired with the fact that the Roger plotline revealed a lot about her romantic life (or that thereof) and her discontentment, that will always just strike me as being somehow subtextually entangled with her feelings for Dominic. (Also,
that totally got a mention on ontd! I always get a somewhat stupid thrill when regular viewers seem to pick up on that.)
+ The fact that they were so nervous & awkward around each other at the end of "Echoes." That was just gloriously weird & suspect in its tension! I think everyone I have ever watched that with has been left wondering whether they made out while under the influence or something.
+ Dominic hitting Hearn in "Man on the Street" when Hearn suggests Adelle is sweet on him. Aw, chivalry! (And torture! Their two favourite things!)
+ In a similar vein, him rushing to stand between her and Boyd in the first episode when Boyd is yelling at her. Of course, I guess this is in the job description, but there is this fierce inherent loyalty in the way he protects her that strikes me as so sort of classically chivalrous and romantic, and it's especially interesting considering they're both rather diabolical people condoning things that are really morally questionable. To make a reference to another Joss pairing, it reminds me a little of Spike and Drusilla, how, sure, they were evil vampires!, but their love and loyalty for one another was really very pure and classically romantic.
+ As mentioned earlier, the fact that they get in each other's space so much after Adelle finding out Dominic was a spy. It's like, if they were really just filled with endless hatred for each other, would they really be so sexy about it? And I think the juxtaposition between how clipped & professional they were before is interesting: it's like they finally feel free to get in each other's space, except it's to torment each other, except somehow it mostly just seems like they want to make out. And are possibly torturing each other with that fact.
So, er, yeah, I think this may just be me endeavoring to facilitate discussion so I don't have to think about school starting tomorrow! Besides, this is an exciting & temporarily joyful time for us, and I figure we should savour it while we still can! The last time I got this excited about amazing shippy happenings in the eleventh episode of the second season of a show, the next two episodes involved ... er, one member of said ship murdering the other member of said ship. I feel like possibly we should be steeling ourselves for extreme badness. (But oh, can't they live post-apocalyptically happily ever after??)
And, heck, let's leave off once more with this one, because I cannot get over how delightful it is. Oh, Topher, Mommy and Daddy so do not approve of your shenanigans.
