When his work came out, it was heralded as a new world order of writing: a man who truly UNDERSTOOD a woman's perspective on the world.
No one knew.... well, only a very few....
the truth didn't come out until his/her mother died. An intrepid reporter, hearing that Tiptree's mother died, actually bothered to look at the obit. It listed survivors, as they do ... and her survivor was Alice. Not James at all.
