: it takes time to make things right

breathe in

It goes something like one, two, three and you’re in love with Kim Jaejoong before you can even think of what happens after. The lucky ones make it to ten, the unfortunate fall in love before they can even get the first number off their tongues.

He’s a tumbling mass of sharp bones, broken smiles stretched over red lips, and eyes as wide as the world. Yunho is one of the unfortunate, not even remembering what life was like before Jaejoong, and he’s got his heart tied together by the others name alone. He thinks he might be pathetic, he thinks it might be love.

Jaejoong goes down like castle walls, built so strong and so high but so very breakable. Yunho stands behind, arms and hands and heart waiting. And then there’s that moment of impact that sends ripples throughout Yunho’s chest and causes his heart to beat overtime.

It’s a little scary, but it’s okay.

“Why hello, Uknow Yunho,” Jaejoong says, blinking large eyes up to his face and grinning all fox-like and somehow it fits him. “I find that I make a great catch, don’t you think?”

Yunho rolls his eyes and somewhere beneath those heavy course books he hears a snort from Changmin. “Of course, Jaejoongie. Of course.”

“I’m perfect for you then.”

Yunho tries to count the amount of time it takes for his heart to start working properly again. He gets to five and Jaejoong is out of his arms, kissing lyrics into Yoochun’s cheeks and linking pinkies with Junsu.

“Having a heart attack, hyung?”

Yunho shakes his head, dismissing the youngest with a wave of his hand. “No. Just in love with an idiot.”

Jaejoong’s drunk and Yunho’s pissed.

“You shouldn’t have been driving.” - “And you shouldn’t be telling me what to do!”

Yunho stays mad for all of four seconds before he clings to Jaejoong, wetting his t-shirt with tears and saying words that neither will remember in the morning (except, they really will and they’ll smile because this is how they are.)

Yunho’s poisoned and Jaejoong’s pissed.

But the main difference is that Jaejoong is crying this time - crying for Yunho - and he looks so vulnerable, so weak. He wraps his arms around the older boy (because that’s all they really are), holds him throughout the night, and cannot help but to think that this how it should always be.

He counts to four and their hearts beat as one.

Summer changes everything.

Three of them have had enough. Their walls crumble and they topple over, but they rebuild themselves (each other) - this time stronger, smarter, better. Yunho watches as they stand proud in courtrooms, feels terrified when he sees them all stone-faced and unsmiling, and he knows that this could be the end. Changmin looks away, waiting to wake up as if this is some kind of dream. But it’s not and maybe that’s what they hate most.

Jaejoong stands beside empty spaces, where he and Changmin should be but aren’t. Their eldest member is left unbalanced and he looks unstable even if he appears strong. Jaejoong still has layers to fall and they start to tear away, piece by piece bit by bit, but Yunho cannot catch them.

When Jaejoong reaches the bottom he blinks that watery gaze to the sky and asks Yunho, “Did we do the right thing?”

The fearless (fearful, actually) leader hasn’t the answer to this question - he doesn’t have any answers, not anymore. So he holds Jaejoong a little closer, closes his eyes, and kisses painful apologies and sincere confessions into the others dark locks.

It takes him three seconds to calm down long enough to say, “we’ll be okay,” and then another three for either of them to believe him.

Things don’t work out in the end and they pack boxes and bags and crates and cars. Yunho hates them (and himself even more) for letting it end this way. He breaks mirrors and tears posters, and Jaejoong quietly watches from where he folds clothes into suitcases.

“Why? Damn it, Jae, why?”

Jaejoong looks at him blankly, and that’s when Yunho notices the purple bags beneath what used to be vibrant eyes but are now only puffy and red with irritation. He makes out to hold his hands, but the elder pulls away, shakes his head.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

Yunho is angry, seething and breaking down on the inside, and he does the one thing he can to maybe make the other stay. He kisses him; desperate, pleading, rough, and wet. He feels tears against his lips, tastes them in the back of his throat, and he’s not too sure of anything at this moment except two things.

He’s in love with Jaejoong and doesn’t want him to go.

Jaejoong pushes away, eyes liquid cool and lips set into a grim line, as he whispers, “I’m sorry,” once more before slamming doors and shattering dreams.

It takes Yunho all of two seconds to realize his heart was in that suitcase and he’s never going to get it back (never wants to have it back.)

They see each other again every day years later. It only took a second (plus two years of denial) for Yunho to realize he needed Jaejoong in his life - to breathe, to live, to love.

“Why hello, Uknow Yunho,” Jaejoong says with a smile curling into place on his lips. “Do you think that for every one person, there’s another just waiting to complete them?”

Yunho grins behind his Styrofoam cup, eyeing the beautiful male that focuses on him from behind the camera eyepiece. “No, but you could prove me wrong if you’d like.”

Now that they are older, the glitter of fame has faded as well as the ear-splitting screams of fan girls. Yunho is dancing around the world with his head held high and his arms wide open, and Jaejoong is traveling the world with a camera in hand and stories to tell. But through and through, Yunho is still the teenager wanting to prove himself and Jaejoong is still the pretty boy with the world in his eyes.

“I still think I’m a pretty good catch. If you’re willing that is.”

Yunho laughs, curls in on himself and cups Jaejoong’s face with careful fingers. “Of course,” he mumbles into a kiss, “of course.”

you're perfect for me

He exhales.
