So here I am watching CSI: Not the good one, and there's been a fire in one of the examining rooms full of evidence. Buddy runs in to pull some evidence out and hits the fire alarm. Now what got me was as soon as he pulls the fire alarm all the lights start making a strobe light effect...... why?

our fire/bomb threat alarms at school are strobe lights. It doesn't make the room lights strobe though, just the alarm lights. I had assumed it was so that deaf people knew there was a problem. In TV land however, I think it's supposed to convey a mood of panic... or funky dance parties.

.. was it Miami?

that's the one. The only deaf fire alarms I've seen were soft red lights like the kind you see on a police car in the 1970's. What with the possibility of seizures and all.

Strobing emergency lights on CSI anonymous August 17 2007, 23:41:50 UTC
Dr. Gissom is genetically predisposed to go deaf (like his mother). The strobing is so that he knows to get out of the building before he becomes a crispy critter.
