In Honor of Spirit Day

“The person who tries to kill him/herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.”

- Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

So America,

This is what you have made LGBTQ kids feel. They feel that whatever death is or whatever death brings, it can’t be worse than this shit.

Don’t be surprised either because when you block Don’t Ask Don’t Tell from being debated on the Senate floor…and I must emphasize that it was just DEBATE, not a chance for REPEAL, you send a message to the children. When you condone the hatred of homophobia in the military but expel honorable gay servicemen and women, you send a message. And nevermind Prop 8 because the Federal Government does not recognize same-sex marriage due to the Defense of Marriage Act.

And I must digress for a moment because this “they’re going to destroy the sanctity of marriage” bullshit has bothered me for a long time. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t we already bomb the sanctity out of marriage with Bridezilla, Britney and Reality TV? And if you want to pick at semantics, no one wants to “redefine marriage” either. To quote Cynthia Nixon:

“When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table.”

Anyway, as I was saying, don’t be fucking shocked when bullies are torturing kids to the brink of suicide because they learned it from you. Your bullying isn’t done in locker rooms, your bullying is done on bigger stages…in court, on the senate floor, in the White House. It is not only your implicit permission that has caused these tragedies but worse; it is the fact that you are implicitly instigating harassment.

* Breaking News that unfortunately SUBSTANTIATES EVERYTHING I JUST WROTE:
SAN FRANCISCO - A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that the Pentagon may temporarily reinstate a ban on openly gay men and women in uniform while a lengthier stay in favor of the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy is considered. (msnbc.com)

Can some please explain to me why Obama is appealing in favor of a law he says he doesn’t support because I'd hate to think that it has something to do with the size of his cojones or I dunno... complete lack thereof.
