magic

My life really does go in cycles. Just a few days ago, I was really upset with my summer plans. Really distraught that I wouldn't be learning anything from my internship, as I'm basically just doing run-crew (which I could be doing at NU and getting paid for it). I thought my summer in Chicago would be completely wasted, and I might as well have gone home to be with my wonderful highschool friends and the fabulous Starbucks crew.

But now. I'm glad I didn't. Because...

(Gasps from the crowd). I know. That's crazy talk. Dori in a musical? She would NEVER be cast in a musical at Northwestern University where the musical theatre people actually know how to sing and read music. How did this absurd event take place?

Well, my lovely readers, I'll tell you. Rives (the director of Lilly's) kind of loves me a little and enjoys working with me. He said a few months ago, he'd love to see me in "Once Upon a Matress" (oh yeah...that's the show I'm in) singing and dancing. For some reason, he enjoyed my mad-crazy dancing skills in Lilly's. Sadly, the show had already been cast, and there was no room for one more actress.

Fast forward to yesterday. When I check my voicemail at 7:23 from Apple Tree Theatre in Highland Park, IL. "Hi Dori, it's Candace. Val Haber just told us she's dropped out of "Mattress" and we'd like to offer you a role in the show. Rehearsal starts at 6:30, but if you can even make it before 8:00, that'd be great."

WHAAAT?

So, I sped over to E-town, and rushed in to my first music rehearsal. At that point, I wasn't sure if I could *actually* do it, because I am committed to Apple Tree and the run of brilliant "Uncle Vanya," but since I'm switching off with one other girl there, she said she'd take some of my nights when I go to rehearsal. So now, all (well, almost all) is good in my life.

In other news, I walked along the beach last night (still weirds me out that there's a beach just a few hundred yards away from me) and saw the outline of what looked like two birds sitting a few feet ahead of me. I realized that they were, in fact, geese, with seven goslings (?) cuddled between the two parents. They were so adorable. When I walked closer, they all stood up at exactly the same time, and went off into the lake in a straight line. One parent in front, and one behind. Incredible. It was a beautiful night in Evanston. And I felt completely okay for the first time in a while.

This summer is going to be good. It has to be. All I need now is a job that actually pays me for my labor. Wish me luck with that.
