Most of today was spent on two trains and then finding out hotel but we were able to explore Venice a bit...
Here is the view from our hotel if you lean way way out:
Otherwise it is just this:
We wandered down to Marco Square, which would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't so hot. Venice is a nightmare to get around, this added to the smell in some places, conflicts with how cool it looks, the combination I think think makes it a place you either love or hate...I seem to polarize between the two. Pictures from our wanderings:
Pictures of the square:
We took the elevator to the top of the bell tower and the view was spectacular:
Then we found a cute little cafe with vines for a roof. It felt authentic and it was great to get out of the sun. I decided to order the fried fish platter from the tourist menu, which on the regular menu the waiter had described as calamari, clams, oysters, fish and scallops, so I was very surprised to find my plate staring at me!
It actually wasn't as bad as it looked, and the calamari was downright delicious, but I did take the American way out with the small fish and used lemon and ketchup. I also couldn't bring myself to eat the heads; so there was just a pile of them left on my plate. The look on my waiter's face when he saw that was priceless.
Last question on the venetian driving test, there are no cars allowed on the islands; which direction is the Piazzale Roma?
