So last night I was sacked out on the couch watching TV, as is my usual. I decided to watch a little Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel, as I usually like that show. I was a bit put off when he chowed down on some still-beating frog hearts, but that's not the point of this post. This post is about the show that came on after wards.
On a lark, I stayed on the channel to see the show that followed, something called "Madventures." From the commercials that had popped up between Zimmern's chowing down, it looked kind of like EXTREAM BACKPACKING AND KICKING or somesuch, and didn't really grab my interest.
Then the show started, and I was hooked right through the eyeball and deep in my brain.
The show is two crazy Finnish guys traveling around the world, seeking out the weird stuff that strikes their fancy. It's kind of a gonzo travellog. I don't know what it is about this show, but the love these two madmen have for their travel, the desire to adventure, the weird cadence of the way the Finns speak English, something about the simplicity of two guys with a camera documenting everything...
To give you an idea, here's the first thing I saw, and it's striking (also pretty much NSFW):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dFALbI5uyQ Before you watch, let me give you a run-down of what this clip is. The two people on the show are Riku and Tunna. Riku is stocky and dark-haired, Tunna is tall, slender and fair-haired. In this clip, as preparation for their travels Riku is getting their "insurance" settled. Their insurance is that he's having a one-karat diamond subcutaneously implanted in his left arm, so that if they ever run out of money, end up stranded or the like, they can nick his arm open and sell the diamond.
As "anaesthetic" Riku is drinking some sort of alcohol. We get to watch as an incision is made in his arm, a small pocket is made under the skin, and the diamond stuffed in. Then the stitching.
And this is a travel show!
I'm utterly fascinated. After watching 10 more minutes, I decided I had to stay up to watch the next episode. As that one started, I ordered my DVR to record the entire season.
If you like bizarreness and adventure and crazy Finns, check it out.
