Addition to Rant

I was watching something last night with Kay. Not sure when it was actually broadcast as she'd DVRed it. It was called The Hospital, and it's a series about, oddly enough a hospital. It's factual and is about the increased stresses and strains being put upon healthcare professionals.

This week was about obesity and gastric banding.

And as we went through the various patients hearing their stories and what they were and weren't doing to actually lose weight themselves. It was a good mix, not sure how truly representative it was, but there were those who really were trying, and with the intervention of weight loss specialists were finding it achievable to lose the weight they wanted to, without the need for surgery. There were those that managed some weight-loss, but still wanted to be banded, and then there were those were blantanlty not trying at all, but seemed to think they were owed a gastric band.

And there we have it. There are people who don't believe they are even responsible for their own health. They seem to think that they are entitled to taking up the time of healthcare professionals, that they are entitled to elective surgery, that it's not their responsibility in any way to help the process or to deal with their own issues. They feel they should be allowed to sit on their arses all the time, shovelling junk food in their mouths, and then when they suddenly get into their heads that they dont want to be spherical any more they are entitled to expensive surgery.

Now that people should have access to medical advances I don't question. Neither do I suggest that it should only be the domain of the wealthy. It is simply that the doctors involved are stating that the patients meet certain requirements first, reduce fat intake, eat some fruit, simple things like that, and they just arent doing it, and then bitching that they need the gastric bands.

People need to start to realise that they're responsible for themselves and their lives.
